Update: Food Universe Marketplace - Glen Rock, NJ

Food Universe Marketplace Opened:  May 2024 Owner:  Jose Olivo Previous Tenants:  A&P > A&P Food Bazaar > A&P Sav-A-Center > Food Basics (closed 2015) > Key Food (2015-2016) > SuperFresh (2016-2024) Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  937 Lincoln Ave, Glen Rock, NJ Photographed:  January 9, 2026 There's been yet another brand change here at 937 Lincoln Avenue. The store dates back to the early 1960s, when it was built as an A&P. It stayed under the A&P umbrella but cycled through several different brands all the way up until the 2015 bankruptcy, when it became a Key Food and quickly switched to SuperFresh once Key Food had secured the rights to the SuperFresh name from A&P as well. In the spring of 2024, the store's previous owners sold it to Jose Olivo, who also owns a Food Universe in nearby Paterson and a handful of others. It then switched from SuperFresh to Food Universe . Over the past year and a half or so...

2328 Plainfield Ave, South Plainfield, NJ

Original Tenant: A&P Address: 2328 Plainfield Ave, South Plainfield, NJ Opened:  early 1960s Closed:  mid 1990s Later Tenants:  CVS (1995-present) Photographed:  July 2020 Quite the find here tucked away on a small street in South Plainfield's residential district! This store -- of just 16,000 square feet -- was built in the early- to mid-60s as a Centennial A&P, and remarkably not just made it to the mid-90s as an A&P, but was actually extensively upgraded. The bulky facade we see here is a scaled-down, if unsuccessfully so, version of the facade we can also find in Peekskill and LaGrangeville , among others. But Peekskill was double this store's size, at 32,000 square feet, and LaGrangeville was just under that at about 31,00 square feet. Highly unusual to see such a major upgrade on such a small store. I believe, though I'm not entirely sure, that this facade was coupled with the Sav-A-Center branding and decor package, and that that store model was...

25 S Broad St, Elizabeth, NJ

Original Tenant:  A&P Address:  25 S Broad St, Downtown, Elizabeth, NJ Opened:  ca. 1970 Closed:  1996 Later Tenants:  Supremo Foodmarket Photographed:  1994, June 2020 Today's snapshot is a 1994 image of (sign of) the A&P Sav-A-Center in downtown Elizabeth! The 33,000 square foot store was built around 1970, probably as a replacement for multiple smaller locations in downtown Elizabeth. Two years after this picture, following the A&P's closure, it was subdivided into a 22,000 square foot Supremo Food Market and an 11,000 square foot Rite Aid (now a Walgreens). We've previously toured the Supremo here . Unfortunately, the above photo is the only one I have -- in my defense, the Supremo predates me. And the photo was more intended to show the St. Elizabeth's hospital before it was demolished, given that most of my father's side of the family was born here. Today it is Trinitas Medical Center and looks rather different . Similarly...

TOUR: ACME Markets - Kenilworth, NJ

ACME Markets Opened: 2015 Previous Tenants:  A&P Location:  801 Kenilworth Blvd, Kenilworth, NJ Photographed:  May 2016, May 2020, June 2020, November 2020, and February 2021 Today we're touring the ACME in Kenilworth, which was my local store for about 6 years back when it was an A&P until about 2006. Then, beginning in March 2020, this became my weekly shopping store again. So I know this one pretty well! The store opened as an A&P in the 90s, probably as a Sav-A-Center, being remodeled to Fresh 2.0 in the mid-2000s (see here ). It was supposed to be a replacement for the nearby Union store , an expanded Centennial, which lasted until the early 2000s due to its proximity to public senior housing. ACME took over in November 2015, with the Quality Built renovation bringing new decor and some new fixtures in spring 2016. I took the following pictures to send in to Acme Style for coverage of the store. The 66,000 square foot store has two entrances, one here (...
