This is a newish grocery-focused format from Dollar General, adding produce, meat, and some other food items in an expanded grocery department. While I didn't really know what to expect going in, I was sorely disappointed. I thought this was the discount grocer division of the Dollar General chain -- something comparable to Save-A-Lot -- but really it's a dollar store with a slightly larger food department. There are a few others in New Jersey, but the 14,000 square foot DG Market in North Arlington -- just across the river from Belleville -- is the latest to open. Original Grocery Tenant: A&P Address: 191 Elmora Ave, Elizabeth, NJ Opened: 1950s Closed: after 1970 Later Tenants:  Windsor Department Store (closed 1987) > AID Auto Stores (opened 1987) > Job Lot (1990s) > 99 Cent & Discount Depot Photographed: May 6, 2017 A former A&P dating back to the 1920s, the building at 191 Elmora Ave (just across Grand St from Food Bazaar ) has seen many tenants through the years. I believe it was another supermarket following A&P, likely in the late 50s or early 60s, but by the late 60s, it was a five-and-dime store. Neither one of my parents, who both grew up in the immediate neighborhood, could remember the name of the store, although my mother thought it might be something like C&L or two letters. Any Elizabeth folks, input? By 2007 it was the 99c Depot ("Everything 99 Cents or More!" Uh...) but it was later changed to the 99c and Discount Depot, which is a small chain or franchise in the area of discount/dol...

Heading back up to Bloomfield, NJ for today's post of a former supermarket. This store started as a Food Fair, then became a Mayfair Foodtown-turned-Edwards, and is currently a 99c & Discount Depot. (This chain had another location in Elizabeth in a former A&P, which is coming soon to the blog.)  Yes, the original arches are still intact! I love it! Probably the two most common reuses for 1950s supermarkets are dollar stores and pharmacies. We saw an example of the former yesterday, and we'll see another example today. ACME tower sign still intact, with a clear and readable Dollar General sign. Acme Style has an excellent and in-depth post on this store, which you can read here . (I'm very excited that I only overlap with Acme Style on two posts of the five this week!) My photos are from December 2017. Not hard to picture this as a supermarket, as Acme Style points out. The location is at 2010 John F. Kennedy Blvd, Union City, just about six blocks north of the North Bergen Food Bazaar . In our Hudson County group , our southernmost point was about fifteen blocks north of this store.

Heading back up to Troy, PA for today's Snapshot. We previously took a quick look at the Tops Friendly Markets in Troy earlier this month. Now we're going to see a store that is currently a Dollar Tree, but was previously a Dollar General and presumably a Bi-Lo and before that, an Insalaco's. Before that it was definitely an ACME! This beautifully preserved pitched-roof store, when it was a Dollar General, was actually in much worse condition. Dollar Tree fixed it up pretty nicely. We can see clearer in the Google street view that it's an early model pitched-roof store... ...since it has the beams coming out at an angle on the side walls. Coming home from the Superfresh Food World in Bloomfield, I drove past the 99c & Discount Depot of Bloomfield, NJ. It's a former Food Fair with the arch intact. Check out more pictures and a better description on Styertowne's Flickr photostream here .
