Here in Prospect Heights, a tiny Key Food was demolished back in 2017 to make way for a new-build, multi-story development on the same site. One report at the time said the new development, including a new supermarket on the ground floor, could open as soon as 2019. Well, here we are in 2026, and the store has finally opened! It's still under the same ownership as the previous Key Food, but is now rebranded as Urban Market (though it's still part of Key Food). While I don't have the exact measurements, the new store is small, just as the old one was -- somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 square feet, actually. Dumbo Market Opening: TBA Owner:  Mohammed Mujalli Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  49-20 5th St, Long Island City, NY Photographed:  July 15, 2025 Development in Long Island City is booming . And with lots of new residents comes the need for new businesses, including supermarkets. At the corner of 5th Street and 49th Avenue, a new mixed-use building under construction is preparing to have a new supermarket on the ground floor owned by Dumbo Market . Dumbo Market has a store each in Dumbo  (opened 2019) and Cobble Hill  (opened 2022), and also owns Urban Market locations in Hoboken  (opened 2025), Park Slope  (opened 2022), and here in Long Island City. The existing LIC Urban Market is just 8000 square feet, and the new space will be over 13,000. Urban Market of Hoboken Opened: March 14, 2025 Owner:  Ameed Mujalli Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  1425 Washington St, Hoboken, NJ Photographed:  March 14, 2025 Welcome to the much-anticipated Urban Market of Hoboken! This store was announced back in 2022 , and since then the independent grocer has faced a series of delays. But the 14,000 square foot store finally opened yesterday, the first commercial tenant of this building constructed in 2017. Urban Market is a brand of Key Food Stores, which has a handful of other locations in New York City under the Urban Market name. One, in Long Island City , is also owned by the Mujalli family; they also own two Dumbo Market locations in Brooklyn, among other stores. The Mujallis are also working on replacing the LIC location with a new, larger store across the street.
