Update: Food Bazaar Supermarket - Brooklyn, NY (Coney Island/Gravesend)

Food Bazaar Supermarket Opened: 2024 Owner: Spencer An Previous Tenants: Pathmark (1970-2015) > Stop & Shop (2015-2024) Cooperative: none Location:  2965 Cropsey Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: July 15, 2026 It's time to return (yes, again, but hopefully for the last time for a while) to the Cropsey Avenue Food Bazaar. Since Food Bazaar acquired this store from Stop & Shop in September 2024, they've slowly but surely redone it from floor to ceiling. You can get a sense of just how extensive the changes are by comparing how Stop & Shop looked shortly before it closed to the pictures in this post, though I've been posting all throughout the renovation process. Now, the store is officially done and has held its grand opening while also extending its hours to 24/7. Okay, so generally when Food Bazaar has done grand openings recently, they hand out a handy little diagram of the layout. I didn't see any when I visited this store, so we make do with my ef...

Update: Stop & Shop - South Orange, NJ

Stop & Shop Opened: 2015 Owner: Ahold Delhaize Previous Tenants: Pathmark Cooperative: none Location: 407 Valley Rd, South Orange, NJ Photographed: June 24, 2026 Welcome back to the South Orange Stop & Shop! It's completed a minor remodel but is looking good these days, especially with a fresh coat of paint outside. You can see the store prior to the remodel (and during) here . This was a pretty small update, with just some new paint and decor along with a reset of the grocery aisles. I'm not entirely certain, but it doesn't look like most of the fixtures were replaced, just repainted. The flooring remains from Pathmark, as does the layout with some grocery aisles to the left of produce and the rest to the right. One odd change during the remodel was moving health and beauty items out of these aisles next to the pharmacy to the complete opposite side of the store, near pharmacy. Now, these aisles next to pharmacy are groceries, and all the nonfoods are on the ...

Update: Extra Supermarket!

Extra, a small Newark-area chain, has been rather active lately. Let's take a look at all of their stores to see what's going on! Click on any picture to expand it. Before we begin, though... why are there two Extra Supermarket chains in the Newark area? If you read my previous posts, I usually attempt to explain the split, but rarely come up with a good explanation not having all the inside information. Here's the best I can do with what's publicly available. Extra started in the 80s in East Orange, adding a few locations across the greater Newark area over time. Apparently, it was a family business, with two relatives basically running the whole thing. And it seems they split in 2018. So Mitchel Lopez, who seems to be one of those relatives, kept stores in Newark's Central Ward and Jersey City (adding one in Elizabeth later). Lopez also owns City Supermarkets . while Maplewood, East Orange, and the store in Newark's Weequahic neighborhood were taken over by an...
