LIDL Opened: March 18, 2026 Owner: Schwarz Group Previous Tenants: none Cooperative: none Location: 1730 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed:  July 15, 2026 Time for another new New York City LIDL! This store opened back in March, but I haven't been able to get to the area until more recently. It's really large for a New York City supermarket, at around 33,000 square feet, and it's on the second floor of a new-build development here in Crown Heights. Once we enter, the layout (and the store in general) is really straightforward and, frankly, not exciting. Produce and bakery are in the front-right corner, with cold cuts in the rest of the first aisle and meat/seafood on the back wall. Dairy and frozen are on the left side here. Except for the slightly jagged layout and the big columns, you'd forget you're not in the suburbs once you get inside this store. Urban Market Opened: July 2026 Owner: Othman family Previous Tenants: none; Key Food previously on property Cooperative: Key Food Stores Location: 805 Washington Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: July 15, 2026 Happy Sunday, and today's posts all concentrate on a relatively small area in central Brooklyn. Here in Prospect Heights, a tiny Key Food was demolished back in 2017 to make way for a new-build, multi-story development on the same site. One report at the time said the new development, including a new supermarket on the ground floor, could open as soon as 2019. Well, here we are in 2026, and the store has finally opened! It's still under the same ownership as the previous Key Food, but is now rebranded as Urban Market (though it's still part of Key Food). While I don't have the exact measurements, the new store is small, just as the old one was -- somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 square feet, actually. Foodtown Opened: July 2026 Owner: Abed and/or Elayyan families Previous Tenants: Rite Aid Cooperative: Allegiance Retail Location: 6900 9th Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: July 15, 2026 A new Foodtown! Even though the Allegiance Retail cooperative doesn't seem to be in the greatest shape lately (you can read more of my musings here , if you're so inclined), they've still had a couple of notable store openings lately. That includes those two in Philadelphia but also a couple of Foodtown locations in New York. Most recently, Brooklyn Harvest Markets has opened a Foodtown in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. This 9,000 square foot supermarket was previously a Rite Aid and underwent an extensive renovation to transform it into a Foodtown affiliated with Brooklyn Harvest Markets (which also has a location in Bay Ridge, formerly The Food Emporium ).
