Zazzera's Supermarket Owner: David Trichilo Opened:  1975 Cooperative:  none Location:  600 Main St, Forest City, PA Photographed:  December 18, 2019 Forest City, Pennsylvania is probably not a place you've ever heard of, with a population of just over 1700. Its quaint Main Street parallels the Lackawanna River well up and out of the Wyoming Valley, around 20 miles northeast of downtown Scranton. Right in the middle of the town is a 6500 square foot supermarket, Zazzera's Supermarket. (As someone whose first AND last names start with Z, I can appreciate the name!) It's been in business since 1975, although I wouldn't be surprised if the space has held a grocery store for longer. As we'll see, though, the store is immaculately maintained and a very complete supermarket, if it is on the older side. Carbondale is also home to a Weis , but for many years there was an independent store just outside of town of around 14,000 square feet. Pasquale's opened in 2009, although I can't quite tell what the name of the store was previously. Movon Family Market? The main grocery area has most of the grocery store, with frozen foods and some more grocery in a second room up a ramp from the main room. The deli is in the main part of the store, but then the second room was beginning to show signs of winding down at the time of my 2019 visit. The store closed in 2021. I was also at this store in 2018, but I was there in the evening, and Pasquale's had updated its hours to closed at 4:30 on Saturdays. Big Chief Market Owner: Eric Ofcharsky Opened:  1992 Cooperative:  none Location:  616 Poplar St, Mayfield, PA Photographed:  August 12, 2020 A town of just 1700, Mayfield, PA doesn't have a supermarket, but it does still have a grocer. The 2600 square foot store has been in town since 1992, but my guess is the building has been a grocery store for much longer. The store briefly closed around 2018-2019, which WNEP attributes to the owner being in unspecified  "legal trouble." The store, in fact, was previously down in Jermyn at the corner of Madison and Bacon . It's unclear if the store moved, or if there were multiple in the past. It also makes sense that the store has been around for decades, given its, well... less-than-politically correct name and mascot. The store has gotten some nice updates recently, with new fixtures around the small store. It has a deli and prepared foods, although it also has groceries and meats. Quinn's Market Owner: Jeff Krenitsky Opened:  1988 Cooperative:  ShurSave Location:  12 Kennedy Dr, Archbald, PA Photographed:  August 12, 2020 Here we are at the final Quinn's ShurSave, with the other locations of the chain in nearby Peckville and to the south in Pittston . At just 16,000 square feet, this is the smaller location, and it also appears to be the oldest, having opened in 1988 (at least under its current ownership). We can tell it's on the older side inside, with quite a bit of neon that isn't working or at least isn't turned on. We enter to produce in the first aisle, with deli/bakery and meat on the back wall. Dairy and frozen are in the last aisle, with additional frozen in an alcove in the front right corner. The exterior has been painted since my visit, possibly in response to a Dollar General opening next door. Quinn's Market Owner:  Jeff Krenitsky Opened:  unknown Cooperative:  Shursave Location:  1437 Main St, Peckville, PA Photographed:  August 12, 2020 Welcome to the Quinn's Market in Peckville, PA! The 42,000 square foot store is in the middle of the small borough of Blakely, although I don't have much history to report on this store. I'm not clear whether Quinn's built the store, or whether they bought it from another operator at some point. We enter to a wide-open spacious produce department in the front right corner of the store in an area with a lower ceiling. Deli, seafood, and meats are in the back right corner, with bakery and dairy on the rest of the back wall. Frozen continues on the left side of the store and in an alcove in the front. This is a very nice store, although it feels like it's larger than it needs to be. This is the larger of the two Quinn's stores (with a third recently closed in Pittston ).
