TOUR: Stop & Shop - West Haverstraw, NY

Stop & Shop Opened: 2008 Previous Tenants:  Pantry Pride > Inserra ShopRite (1980-2005) Location:  7 Samsondale Plz, West Haverstraw, NY Photographed:  June 2, 2021 Welcome to the Stop & Shop in West Haverstraw! Thanks to a commenter on my original post from back in 2019 we have a very extensive history of this location, beginning with its opening as Pantry Pride in the late 60s or early 70s. Inserra ShopRite moved in by the late 70s and began a major renovation of the store, expanding it to its present 50,000 square feet. In 2005, Inserra closed the store (possibly around the time Garnerville opened a mile and a quarter west) and three years later, Stop & Shop opened up shop after a renovation, including turning a walkway from the front parking lot to the back parking lot into an extension of the sales floor. In 2010, Inserra opened a much larger new-build store in Stony Point, just under a mile north. We're headed there tomorrow. This is Inserra's orig...

Back in Time: Pantry Pride 1975

There's nothing like a bargain! Or at least that's what Pantry Pride seemed to think in September 1975 when they ran this ad. Pantry Pride was the lower-end, more value-focused branch of Food Fair, and their stores populated the Elizabeth area at Spring and Jersey and in Elmora  (where my father later worked when it was a Foodtown), where the SuperFresh in Roselle is now, and where the Stop & Shop in Union is now. Man, I want fresh trout at 69 cents a pound. Every once in a while I'll get really nice fresh rainbow or steelhead trout and I love it. Anyway, tomorrow is our last day of ads and we are ending on a very famous name everyone here is going to know!

Snapshot: Weis Markets - Lincoln Hwy, Lancaster, PA

Weis Markets Opened: late 1970s Previous Tenants:  Food Fair > Pantry Pride Location:  1603 Lincoln Hwy E, Lancaster, PA Photographed:  August 20, 2019 Our first Lancaster city store is this roughly 56,000 square foot store which originated as a much smaller Food Fair, which was converted to Pantry Pride in the 1970s before closing before the end of the decade. JoshAustin610 explains that there were several Pantry Prides in this part of PA sold to Weis at the time, and that this store has been expanded many times over the years by both Food Fair/Pantry Pride and Weis. When Weis moved in here in the 1970s, they were replacing an older store of theirs across the street, which appears to have been in this strip mall . Also nearby is this former ACME just around the corner, which when Acme Style visited a few years ago still had 1970s ACME decor on the walls (just painted over) in the Dollar General. Before we head into the downtown area of Lancaster, we're going to che...

Special Report: SuperFresh - Old Bridge, NJ

SuperFresh Owner: unknown Opened:  coming soon Previous Tenants:  Food Fair > Pantry Pride > Drug Fair > Walgreens Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  2625 CR-516, Old Bridge, NJ Photographed:  August 21, 2022 Welcome to Old Bridge! This sprawling town of 65,000 takes up over 40 square miles in central New Jersey, and we've previously stopped by a few stores around here including the ShopRite , the ACME , the Garden Farm , and a former ACME . Much of the business is centered around the US-9 corridor, but there are other pockets of small business districts on other roads. We're here in the Browntown area on county route 516 -- just about a mile west of route 9 -- at the Old Bridge Town Center, formerly the Browntown Shopping Center. Around 25,000 square feet of anchor space has been taken over by a SuperFresh owner, and the store is being prepared for opening. But after an initial November 2021 announcement, I didn't hear anything more about the s...

Update: Universal Food Markets - Rahway, NJ

Universal Food Markets Owner: Vishu Patel Opened: between 1997 and 2000 Cooperative: Key Food Stores Location: 2325 Elizabeth Ave, Rahway, NJ Photographed: June 2022 We return to the Rahway Universal, again, for another update with the renovation very, very close to finished! We last saw the store back in January , when I said the same thing. But there was just one thing stopping me from saying the remodel was done. Before we head inside, we see the updated signage and renovated storefront facing Elizabeth Avenue. I actually do like the new logo and signage, but why did they put dark green lettering on a dark brown background with no outline or anything? I don't get that, but the store does look good. Here's an overview of the whole place... As we can see, the store looks way better than it did previously. It's only barely recognizable as the same building. Now let's just take a moment to appreciate how far we've come. In the last year or so, this store has been...

Update: SuperFresh - Roselle, NJ

SuperFresh Owner: Howard Lee / Food World Supermarkets Opened:  2017 Previous Tenants:  Food Fair > Pantry Pride > Foodtown > Food King > A Seabra Foods Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  550 Raritan Rd, Roselle, NJ Photographed:  March 2022 Some signs of life are starting to appear at the Roselle SuperFresh, which remains closed after storm damage in September 2019. While the store isn't exactly ready to reopen, there is some slight progress. No change really on the outside, although again there is an indication that the store will in fact be reopening: you'll see a number of yellow signs around the building directing people to a mailbox in the back which was not there last time. One thing we also skipped last time: a look inside the deli-bakery room. As we'll see, a lot of the fixtures have been removed. There's also signs of construction, such as the ceiling having been removed. While it may mean that there's more extensive renovation bein...
