Golden Harvest Produce Market - Kittery, ME

Golden Harvest Produce Market Opened: 1975 Owner:  John and Juliana Flintosh Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  none Location:  47 State Rd, Kittery, ME Photographed:  March 6, 2025 Welcome to Maine! Our first stop in the state is right over the New Hampshire border, just across the river from Portsmouth . This 6500 square foot produce market and gourmet food store has been in business since 1975. The produce department extends across this middle part of the store, with some coolers for dairy on the right side, then the rest of the store to the left. Baked goods, cheese, and prepared foods are over there on the left. It's not a full supermarket, but the store is packed with unusual items and local produce... ...such as these freshly-harvested local mushrooms. There aren't traditional grocery aisles here exactly, but the grocery shelving is to the left of the produce. Fruit lines the back wall, and wine and grocery are opposite. There are a number of full sup...

Update: Orange Farmers Market - Orange, NJ

Orange Farmers Market Opened: 2000 Owner:  Tony Chyoi Previous Tenants:  unknown Cooperative:  none Location:  502 Main St, City of Orange, NJ Photographed:  October 24, 2025 Orange, NJ's greengrocer shop, the Orange Farmers Market, is getting a big change. And it happened to be in the process of being delivered on a flatbed truck when I was recently at the store. A long seafood display case was in the process of being rolled into the store and off this truck when I recently stopped by. The store is only 6,000 square feet, so it's quite small. But there are a few aisles of produce, about three grocery aisles, and some dairy and frozen foods. The new seafood counter is going into the back of the store. The old-school store has gotten some updates since I last visited , but the seafood department is the main change. The shelving at the back of the store had been cleared out to make way for the new display case, which I assume is to be installed here along the bac...

Snapshot: Produce Junction - Glenside, PA

Produce Junction Owner: Albert Gentile Opened:  unknown Previous Tenants:  Penn Fruit Cooperative:  none Location:  265 S Easton Rd, Glenside, PA Photographed:  July 22, 2021 This 1950s-era (pre-arch) Penn Fruit location in Glenside, just outside of the downtown, today has been expanded from the roughly 8900 square foot original supermarket to the present 16,000 square foot produce and garden center store. Produce Junction is not a chain I'm very familiar with, but they're a regional 20-store chain with locations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The stores tend to be no-frills warehouse-style stores selling loose and bulk produce and other similar items, but really no other grocery items. Glenside does have a small supermarket today, but before we get there we'll be headed to a place I suspect was previously a supermarket on the town's main street over on Grocery Archaeology on Monday!

Snapshot: Tropical Dairy Corp - Norwood

Today's Snapshot is a quick look at a store that seems to be a produce/greengrocer shop with some groceries and, apparently, dairy products. Unfortunately, it seems that this store has gone out of business since my pass through the neighborhood. I always hate to see any store go out of business, unless it's really absolutely horrible. That "Fruits & Vegetables" panel looks like it could just as easily be from 2005 as 1965. I love it! Tropical Dairy Corp is (was) at 3494 Jerome Ave, Bronx, NY. Photographed June 2018

Snapshot: C Kim's Fruit & Vegetable - Fordham Center

For today's snapshot, we're heading back west on Kingsbridge Rd towards the Kingsbridge Armory . (Random side note: The past few days' posts were labeled incorrectly. They have been fixed.) Today's snapshot is a little greengrocer shop along Kingsbridge Road. There are several others, but this is the only one I photographed, I believe. C Kim's Fruit & Vegetable is located at 75 E Kingsbridge Rd, Bronx, NY. Here, you can get an idea of the little storefronts that line this part of Kingsbridge Rd. I just loved the way this shot looked with each business lined up right next to the others. Very New York City in nature! Photographed June 2018

Snapshot: California Fruit & Vegetables - Fordham Heights

Just across the street from Bronx Marketplace is a small greengrocer called Something California Fruit & Vegetables. Unfortunately, I am utterly unable to make out the first word. From a Google Maps street view , we can get a better view of the name. Nongra California? Like many of these small greengrocers, the store appears to be basically a convenience store with a selection of fresh produce. I always prefer when stores do sell fresh produce, even when they're small like this, because more access to fresh produce in a neighborhood is always good. Plus, it forces Bronx Marketplace, Food Universe , and Pioneer (which we'll tour tomorrow) to step up their own produce offerings. This three-block stretch of 183rd St is definitely an example of intense competition meaning better offerings for the customer! This greengrocer is located at 14 W 183rd St, Bronx, NY. Photographed June 2018

Look Inside: Sal's Fruit & Vegetables - Fordham Center

Right under the Fordham Center sign we saw yesterday is a greengrocer with several other departments as well. At the time of my visit, it was Sal's Fruit & Vegetables, but when driving by later, I noticed the awning had been painted. Sal's was a large store with strangely little selection, although they did have a lot of produce. The storefront is, in fact, so wide I couldn't get it all in one shot! Not a bad display at all of produce outside, but unfortunately it didn't look like it was really drawing customers into the store. This set of exterior and interior photographs comes from June 2018, but when I drove by again in August 2018, the awning had been painted dark green. A new sign saying "Fruit Meat Market" has been added along the bottom, as you can see on Google Maps. The store is made up of several smaller storefronts combined. Inside, the store was kind of dingy and definitely, well, rough around the edges. They did have a meat...

Snapshot: Apple Tree Market - Kingsbridge

Here's a quick look at a small greengrocer along the Broadway corridor in Kingsbridge. Apple Tree Market Fruits & Vegetables is located at 5590 Broadway, Bronx, NY. Photographed June 2018

Look Inside: Riverdale Farm - Riverdale

Let's kick off our Bronx group with a look at a very small greengrocer in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. As I mentioned briefly in the "coming soon" post , Riverdale is a very suburban and a relatively affluent area. This small greengrocer is located on 235th Street, which is part of what serves as a downtown area for Riverdale. Tomorrow's Key Food is also located in this downtown-type area. Riverdale Farm is the first store in the top left corner. It's a very stereotypical New York City service for a tiny store like this to offer delivery. It seems that the staff consists of the couple that owns it and maybe one or two other people. And when I snapped a picture as I walked by, one member of said staff was not too thrilled -- or at least more than a little confused. Like most small greengrocers, refrigerator cases line one wall with dry produce in the middle and grocery items along the back and sides. The store is located at 574 W 235th S...

Snapshot: Diamond Produce - Confluence, PA

When we visited the Confluence Foodmart, I made a brief mention of the Diamond Produce store a few blocks west of the Foodmart. I decided to give the store its own dedicated Snapshot post. Although we're not really going to be seeing anything new, I wanted to separate it out as I'm pretty sure Diamond is itself a former Acme. (Incidentally, this week isn't themed. Next week will be, but then we're fast approaching our next big group of stores, 44 to be exact!) Okay, okay, we saw this picture already. I know. But let's take another look at it. Does the store not look almost identical to (if slightly wider than) the definite former Acme in Canandaigua , and maybe even closer to the likely former Acme in Union . (In fact, I started to do the Photoshop tricks to get the old Acme logo on this storefront, but I figured I could just send you over to the image I did for Union instead.) If you want to look it up yourself, the address is 606 Logan Pl, Confluence, PA.
