This was actually the first Supremo I went to, back in probably 2014, and it honestly was not in great shape. But despite the fact that it hasn't received a full renovation, my 2020 visit showed the store looking much better than it ever did before. The store actually isn't all that old, having opened around 2005 in a former Valley Fair department store (but I don't know the timeline for anything other than Supremo's opening). The store is oriented towards the front with checkouts along the front end. The parking lot is in the rear, with a walkway between this building and the rest of the strip. Original Tenant: ACME Markets Address: 880 Springfield Ave, Irvington, NJ Opened:  1951 Closed:  1970s Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  July 2020 Okay, so I uh... didn't do my homework on this one. I was under the impression the ACME was here where the 99 Cent Depot is now, but it wasn't. (The 99 Cent Depot, by the way, is actually two floors with a basement, so it's more likely an old department store.) JoshAustin610 identifies the building all the way at the corner, or all the way to the right in my picture, as the actual former ACME. However, I was not under the impression that ACME was still building 6600 square foot stores as late as 1951; the Dollar Tree building looks to me more like a former ACME at 13,000 square feet. These buildings are at the far eastern end of the 800-900 block of Springfield Avenue, but the westernmost building of this strip now called Maple Spring Commons is a supermarket which we'll be touring tomorrow on The Market Report ...

We're heading over to Irvington, NJ, a small city in Essex County that also has one of the highest crime rates in the state. Contrary to what you might think, this has not deterred supermarket owners from investing in the township. Supremo opened a store in Irvington around 2005, while City here opened in 2010 under the Super Fine Fare banner, switching two years later. And most recently, James Lee's SuperFresh opened in the former Pathmark in the summer of 2016. This particular property has a long history as a supermarket. Sam Aidekman had operated a Good Deal Supermarket here beginning in the 1960s, and when Good Deal sold to a ShopRite operator in 1976, it's possible this store became a ShopRite briefly. It was definitely later a Mayfair Foodtown before closing in the 1990s. A short-lived C-Town operated here about 2000-2005, and is visible closed in the 2007 Google Maps street view of the property.
