Sprouts Farmers Market Opened: June 7, 2024 Previous Tenants:  A&P (1990s-2015) Cooperative:  none Location:  327 NJ-35, Aberdeen, NJ Photographed:  June 22, 2024 It's been a while since we've seen a Sprouts! The Phoenix-based natural food store chain has just opened its third New Jersey location, this one near the shore in central Jersey. (The other two, in Marlton and part of a former SuperFresh in Haddonfield , are both in Philadelphia suburbs.) I was really excited to find the Marlton location by chance, but having returned to Sprouts a few more times in the years since, I'm just not sure the store is quite as good as I remember. Still, it's a nice place with a lot of good products. But I think overall, it falls into the uncomfortable middle ground of being too high-priced and not being specialized enough. ShopRite of Aberdeen, NJ Owner: Richard Saker / Saker Supermarkets Opened: 2000s Previous Tenants:  none; replaced 1970s-era store on same property Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  318 Lloyd Rd, Aberdeen, NJ Photographed:  January 2021 Around the time the Stop & Shop across the street moved out of a former Grand Union into a new, 90,000 square foot building, the 1970s-era Saker ShopRite here constructed a new store on the same property. This one is just a tiny bit smaller than the Stop & Shop at 87,000 square feet, and we have a bit of a chicken and the egg situation here because I don't know which store's replacement prompted the other to do the same. Anywho, I don't have interior pictures of this location but tomorrow we are touring another Saker ShopRite about two and a half miles to the northeast right here. Come back to check it out! Stop & Shop Opened: early 2000s Previous Tenants:  none Location:  1129 NJ-34, Aberdeen, NJ Photographed:  January 2021 We're heading just under a quarter of a mile south on NJ-34 from yesterday's tour for our two stores today -- both on 34 and just next door to each other. This is a Stop & Shop, built in the early 00s, has to be one of the largest Stop & Shop locations out there at nearly 90,000 square feet. It features a rather boring decor package which we saw in Union . It replaced an older location at the other end of the strip mall, previously a Grand Union and now a Bed Bath & Beyond. Original Tenant: A&P Address: 325 NJ-35, Cliffwood, Aberdeen, NJ Opened:  1990s on site of older store Closed:  2015 Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  December 2020 Our first Monmouth store is one of several large, relatively new stores left without a replacement tenant scattered around the New Jersey area when A&P went under in 2015. (Another example, by the way, which is about the same age as this store, is the Pathmark in Linden .) The 59,000 square foot store was later subdivided, with LA Fitness taking 37,000 and the remainder staying vacant at least until my visit in December 2020. While LA Fitness removed the A&P facade , the rest of the storefront still has it intact, just painted. LA Fitness seems to take up A&P's grand aisle and the first few aisles on the right side of the store, meaning that their entrance is approximately where A&P's was.
