Hurley's Fresh Market Owner: Robert Hurley Opened:  2005 Cooperative:  IGA Location:  387 York Ave, Towanda, PA Photographed:  August 17, 2022 We're returning to the Hurley's IGA in Towanda, 15 miles south of the New York border, which we first saw in 2019 with a drive-by picture from August 2018. Four years later, I'm back to tour the 17,000 square foot store. It, of course, was built in the 1960s as an A&P Centennial but I'm not sure exactly when A&P closed. Hurley's opened in 2005, and I'm not sure if there was another tenant between Hurley's and A&P. It looks like Hurley's did a pretty large renovation around 2011. Now I am wondering when A&P closed. Some of the produce category markers look very, very similar to the 1990s A&P Food Market signage. It's possible that this is simply a coincidence, but it's also possible A&P lasted here into the 90s and left this sign and others like it behind. Produce is in the fron...

Tops Friendly Markets Opened: unknown, ca. 2000 Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets (1960s-1995) > Bi-Lo (1995-ca. 2000) Location:  2758 PA-414, Canton, PA Photographed:  August 17, 2022 I don't have to say it, you all already know. Today's store tour is a former pitched-roof ACME! You can't miss that roofline. And we can tell that this one is an earlier model, too, because of the beams that slant outwards on the sides where they connect with the roof. Looks like ACME or a later tenant added some covers on some of the front windows on the right side, but mostly the original structure is intact! This store was built as a 14,000 square foot ACME in the 1960s before being sold to Penn Traffic in 1995. It became a Bilo , which because it was franchised remained until 2011 before being sold to Tops. It's been updated with the Tops decor I'm most familiar with, in an attractive but simple renovation. Original Grocery Tenant: Dushore Market Address: 220 Water St, Dushore, PA Opened:  unknown Closed:  2021 Later Tenants:  vacant Photographed:  August 17, 2022 The small town of Dushore, PA has a Hurley's IGA today, but not that long ago had a second store in town. The Dushore Market was here until 2021, changing ownership in 2019 and I'm not sure how long it was in business before that. A commenter on Flickr notes that the store was originally a furniture store. A sign celebrating Dushore's 150th anniversary in 2009 remains on the side of the building, a nice piece of town memorabilia. Inside, the store hasn't changed much since it was in business... We can get a really good look into the supermarket from the big windows in the front. Produce and maybe dairy was in the first aisle, meat and deli on the back wall, and frozen on the left side of the store. Hurley's Fresh Market Owner: Robert Hurley Opened:  1982 Cooperative:  IGA Location:  121 W Main St, Dushore, PA Photographed:  August 17, 2022 We're here in Dushore, PA to check out the town's only supermarket, although in a town of 450, that might just be all you need. The store is around 8200 square feet, and was opened in 1982 as Hurley's IGA. Today, the store is one of two Hurley's Fresh Markets, with the other one in Towanda . We'll also be revisiting that store this time around! You enter in the front left corner of the store and walk across the front-end to the right side, where aisle 1 has produce and dairy. In the picture below, I'm facing up towards the front wall. Deli and meats are on the back wall with frozen foods on the far left side of the store.
