TOUR: Old World Food Market - Nyack, NY

Old World Food Market Owner: Andrew Poma Jr. Opened:  2009 Cooperative:  none Location:  40 NY-59, Nyack, NY Photographed:  March 8, 2023 Welcome to the Old World Food Market of Nyack! This spectacular store is actually just 15,000 square feet, although it feels much larger -- and built around a 9,000 square foot or so barrel-roof building. I'm not positive what the building was originally, as it has some characteristics that resemble an A&P, but there was also definitely an A&P across the street -- and both were built between 1953 and 1964. Old World Food Market opened up here in 2009 after a gorgeous renovation to turn the space into a roomy gourmet supermarket. We enter in the front right corner of the store to bakery and prepared foods on the right side of the store. Massive hot and cold food bars line the left side of that aisle. Meat and seafood counters are at the back of the first aisle, with dairy and frozen in the rest of the back part of the stor...

41 NY-59, Nyack, NY

Original Grocery Tenant: A&P Address: 41 NY-59, Nyack, NY Opened:  between 1953 and 1964 Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  March 8, 2023 From the parking lot of the Old World Food Market across the street, we can get a look at the former 9,000 square foot A&P of Nyack! This store was built between 1953 and 1964, and my initial assumption was that at some later point, A&P moved across the street into what's now Old World, but actually the two stores were built around the same time which makes me think Old World was a competitor, like possibly Safeway or a Foodtown or something like that. But I'm not really sure. Up next, we're headed into downtown Nyack on The Independent Edition tomorrow for a small store in town!

Special Report: Nyack Fresh Market - Nyack, NY

Nyack Fresh Market Owner: Wilson Bermeo Opened:  February 20, 2023 Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  119 Main St, Nyack, NY Photographed:  March 8, 2023 In Orange, we saw the transition of a Krasdale-affiliated CTown to a Key Food-affiliated Universal Food Markets. Key Food is growing in a lot of ways, including conversions like that, but they've also been opening a lot of new stores around the tri-state area in recent years. The 15,000 square foot Nyack Fresh Market is one of their latest openings, having opened in late February in the middle of the small down on the west shore of the Mario Cuomo Bridge (formerly the Tappan Zee) across the Hudson. A former theater building was converted to this supermarket, which despite its small size feels very spacious and complete. It's also a beautiful store. We enter on the left side of the store to the deli-bakery department, and although it appears they don't bake in-store, they have a lot of baked goods and a lot of ...

TOUR: Met Fresh - Nyack, NY

Taking the place of an outdated Stop & Shop here in Nyack, NY is the all-new, independently-owned Met Fresh Market. It's 28,000 square feet, a former Grand Union. Stop & Shop closed this store in favor of the newly-opened Orangeburg, NY store, much nicer, and it sat vacant for a few years before being leased by independent supermarket operator Rudy Nuñez, who also owns stores in New York City. Like so many of the stores we've been seeing recently, it was completely gutted before being reopened. Not sure if this store still has its Grand Opening signage; at the time of my visit in February it did. (The Elizabeth Food Bazaar still has a Grand Opening banner a year after they opened!) Interesting that this store chooses to have nonfood merchandise outdoors like firewood and rock salt - most stores like this put nonperishable foods outside. Notice the garage door-type cover here. At night, they can simply pull it down and lock up the merchandise. Heading in, you ...
