GIANT Food Stores Opened: 2010 Previous Tenants:  none; Food Fair and older GIANT on site Location:  1605 Lititz Pk, Lancaster, PA Photographed:  August 20, 2019 One of quite a few big chain supermarkets north of the city of Lancaster (GIANT, Weis, Whole Foods, Wegmans) is this store which was built in 2010 on the site of an older GIANT. The store is around 75,000 square feet and looks quite nice inside. We are done with the city of Lancaster now! Original Tenant: ACME Markets Address: 1507 Lititz Pk, Lancaster, PA Opened:  1960s Closed:  1982 Later Tenants:  Rea & Derick (1983-1991) > CVS (1991- ) Photographed:  August 20, 2019 We should all be able to tell right away who the original tenant here on Lititz Pike north of downtown Lancaster was! The 19,000 square foot pitched-roof store was built as an ACME in the 1960s. I'm surprised that the facade hasn't been renovated more since CVS has been here, but it's still looking a lot like it once did as an ACME. JoshAustin610 provides some more detail on the history of this store location, noting that it closed in 1982. There's no more ACME here, but there is a Weis about 3/4 of a mile west, a Whole Foods about 1/4 of a mile west, and a GIANT slightly less than that to the north. Huber's West End Market Owner: Glenn and Dee Huber Opened:  1960-2021 Cooperative:  none Location:  501 W Lemon St, Lancaster, PA Photographed:  August 20, 2019 Huber's West End Market had been open since 1960, and I managed to get to it just before it closed in 2021. It was taken over by new owners who are renovating it to prepare to reopen it, but that hasn't happened yet. When I visited, the approximately 2,000 square foot store was fully functional and a very quaint old-fashioned grocery store. It has produce and a few grocery aisles on the left side, with the butcher/deli and frozen foods on the right side. It definitely felt a little bit like a time capsule, but in a good way -- it didn't feel neglected, even though it was very old and reaching the end of its life. Mandros Imported Foods Owner: Dino Mandros Opened:  1950s Cooperative:  none Location:  351 N Charlotte St, Lancaster, PA Photographed:  August 20, 2019 A quick look at Mandros Imported Foods today, a small shop of specialty Greek, Italian, and Mediterranean foods in northwestern Lancaster. I regret not going in, as it looks like a fun place to stop and look around . Notice that, in that exterior picture on Yelp, there's a sign for Red Rose Food Stores. I wonder if that was a cooperative of independent grocers in this part of Pennsylvania at some point. I couldn't find anything searching online. Anybody familiar with that name? There's another grocery store about two blocks away, which we'll be taking a look inside tomorrow!

Bravo Supermarkets Owner: Marcela Marquez Opened:  2017 Previous Tenants:  county offices Cooperative:  Krasdale Foods Location:  225 W King St, Lancaster, PA Photographed:  August 20, 2019 We're on the other side of downtown Lancaster from Friday's CTown  for a look at that owners' other store, a 8700 square foot Bravo just to the west of the downtown center. This building was occupied for many years by county offices (and, personally, I wouldn't be surprised if it was built as a retail store of some kind originally) and was taken over by these owners to open it as a Bravo in 2017. The store is looking really good, but lacks some of the warmth of the CTown. That's partially because it wasn't as crowded, meaning it didn't feel quite so lively. But it's also that this store's decor overall tends to be more gray than beige, giving it a colder feel. Compare this flooring and the color of the walls, for instance, to the CTown's. CTown Supermarkets Owner: Marcela Marquez Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  A&P (closed by 1980s) Cooperative:  Krasdale Foods Location:  451 E King St, Lancaster, PA Photographed:  August 20, 2019 Our first downtown Lancaster supermarket is this CTown! The store is only about 9,000 square feet, but is a very complete supermarket. (As a side note, the owners of Brothers International and Brothers Foodmax were previously partners in this CTown.) It was built in the 1950s as an A&P and closed by the early 80s when the Philadelphia-area A&Ps were converted to SuperFresh around 1983. Although it's a pretty small store, it's a very well-run store -- extremely clean, packed with merchandise, and newly renovated. It's been a CTown for at least 15 years, but I'm not sure exactly when it opened. Deli is immediately on the right upon entering, with produce and meat in the first aisle on the right side of the store. There's a butcher counter in the back-right ...
