Happy Sunday, and today's posts all concentrate on a relatively small area in central Brooklyn. Here in Prospect Heights, a tiny Key Food was demolished back in 2017 to make way for a new-build, multi-story development on the same site. One report at the time said the new development, including a new supermarket on the ground floor, could open as soon as 2019. Well, here we are in 2026, and the store has finally opened! It's still under the same ownership as the previous Key Food, but is now rebranded as Urban Market (though it's still part of Key Food).
While I don't have the exact measurements, the new store is small, just as the old one was -- somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 square feet, actually. And while this store was under construction, Prospect Heights continued its gentrification. So the new store is very, very different from the previous Key Food.
Produce is in the first aisle on the right side of the store and continues onto the back wall, with cold cuts, meats, and deli items/prepared foods on the rest of the back wall (there's no in-store deli, but they are preparing items onsite, possibly in the basement). The back of the store also has a walk-in beer cooler. Dairy and frozen are on the left side.
This is definitely a tiny supermarket, but as you can see, it's extraordinarily extensive given the tiny space. There's a lot here, even in a store without any service departments.
There are a handful of Urban Market locations in NYC and New Jersey, all of which are affiliated with Key Food, but they're under different ownership from each other.
You can see the selection of fresh-prepared foods here (some done in-store and some done offsite, probably), and on the other side of the beer cooler is the cheese department.
An entertaining comparison: the old Key Food's Google Maps reviews section gave it an average of two stars out of five, with 26 reviews. The new Urban Market already has 29 reviews, with an average of 4.7 stars.
Dairy also extends onto the front wall of the store, as the front-end is very small with just four registers lined up on the wall rather than in the usual formation. You can also see here how they're keeping the (still very new, to be sure) store extremely well-stocked. They've packed so much in by having very few facings of a lot of products.
