Snapshot: Harris Teeter - James Island South, SC

Harris Teeter Opened: 2013 Previous Tenants:  Piggly Wiggly Location:  1985 Folly Rd, James Island, Charleston, SC Photographed:  January 2022 Our final store along Folly Road is the southernmost on James Island, and the third Harris Teeter on Folly. (See the first here , and I have not photographed the second.) Like the first, this one was a Piggly Wiggly acquired in 2013 by Harris Teeter. The second, at 675 Folly, was not previously a Piggly Wiggly. Well, the whole point of driving out all this way was to go visit Folly Beach, which is located on Folly Island which has just one grocery store. Head over to The Independent Edition tomorrow to check it out! Update   Local expert Carlton Swift  says: "This was the first Harris Teeter to offer gas—All because of the acquisition of Piggly Wiggly. Many other locations have since been built with a gas & convenience store, but this was the first to have it."

Snapshot: Publix - Riverland Market, James Island, SC

Publix Super Markets Opened: 2019 Previous Tenants:  none, built on site of former strip mall Location:  1411 Folly Rd, James Island, Charleston, SC Photographed:  January 2022 This 45,000 square foot Publix is towards the southern side of James Island, and was constructed in 2019 on the site of a closed strip mall that appears to have had an achor that looks like a supermarket. It's just across the street from the Food Lion we saw yesterday . It's the second Publix we've seen on Folly Road, and tomorrow, we move on to our second Harris Teeter on Folly Road (but the third in total, including the one we didn't see). Come back to check it out! Update   Local expert Carlton Swift  says: "The former grocer in the previous shopping center was a Bi-Lo. Bi-Lo moved up Folly Rd into a former Kroger. The former Kroger is now PetSmart. Next door to the former Kroger was a former Kmart. The Kmart was torn down and became a Super Bi-Lo. It now sits empty."

Snapshot: Food Lion - James Island, SC

Food Lion Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  none Location:  1291 Folly Rd, James Island, Charleston, SC Photographed:  January 2022 Our next stop along Folly Road is this Food Lion, which appears to be on the older side of Food Lions but, like all the other ones we've seen recently, has the latest decor package inside and looks to have had some fixture updates too. It's just across the street from another supermarket, which we'll be taking a look at tomorrow!

Snapshot: Publix - Merchants Village, James Island, SC

Publix Super Markets Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  none Location:  520 Folly Rd, James Island, Charleston, SC Photographed:  January 2022 We arrive at our next Publix snapshot, and again, sadly I do not have any Publix tours. I do think there are many wonderful Publix tours over at Albertsons Florida Blog , which I highly recommend. This 38,000 square foot store is just over half a mile from yesterday's Harris Teeter and just under half a mile from the next southern Harris Teeter at 675 Folly Road, which I did not photograph. Up next we move south on Folly Road about two and a half miles to the southern part of James Island, where we'll be seeing our next three stores. Come back tomorrow to check out the next! Update Local expert Carlton Swift says: "There was a Winn Dixie here before Publix. It was torn down and rebuilt for Publix."

Snapshot: Harris Teeter - Maybank, James Island, SC

Harris Teeter Opened: 2013 Previous Tenants:  Piggly Wiggly Location:  1739 Maybank Hwy, James Island, Charleston, SC Photographed:  January 2022 We are just to the southwest of downtown Charleston as we are moving south along Folly Road, which takes us out to Folly Island via James Island. This Harris Teeter is at the corner of Folly Road and Maybank Highway, and its address is on Maybank, which runs along its side. By the way, this store is on James Island (Google Maps still identifies this as part of Charleston, which is why I'm labeling it as both), and from here on out you can say goodbye to the mainland because we'll be completely on the islands for the rest of our time in South Carolina! We'll be spending a few days on James Island, then moving on to Folly Island to the south, then on to Johns, Kiawah, and Wadmalaw Islands to the west. The 40,000 square foot store was previously a Piggly Wiggly, and it appears to be part of the same group of stores sold in 2013 to...
