News Roundup: August 2025

For this weekend's special coverage, let's take a look at some of the New York City-area grocery news -- because there's been a lot happening! As always, follow me at news.marketreportblog.com to hear breaking news first. A mechanical note: use the menu bar at the top to filter recent posts if you'd like to see only the recent Boston-area stores , new store openings and other news , and updates . Now, onto this weekend's updates. First for a look at the bigger news... Wakefern acquires Morton Williams Wakefern Food Corp., the cooperative that runs ShopRite stores, has acquired NYC chain Morton Williams outright. It seems that the stores will be corporately-owned, joining about 100 other Wakefern-owned ShopRite and Price Rite locations. Tops Friendly Markets - Ellenville, NY

Tops Friendly Markets Opened: June 8, 2025 Owner:  Northeast Grocery Previous Tenants:  ShopRite (1993-2024) Cooperative:  none Location:  100 Tops Markets Blvd, Ellenville, NY Photographed:  July 2, 2025 Welcome to Ellenville, NY! This small town is about 70 miles northwest of New York City, about 30 miles northeast of Port Jervis . The only major supermarket in town was a ShopRite, built in 1993 by Big V Supermarkets. When Big V went under around 2000, ownership of the ShopRite transferred to SRS, the corporate division of Wakefern. SRS announced in 2023 that they'd be closing this store in the summer of 2024 , shortly after they pulled out of the Capital Region to the north. By late 2023, Northeast Grocery had acquired the five Capital Region stores, reopening four of them as Market 32 in early 2024 after some very light remodeling. Northeast Grocery also took over this Ellenville location, but under its Tops division. It underwent a bit more work than the...

TOUR: Tops Friendly Markets - Canton, PA

Tops Friendly Markets Opened: unknown, ca. 2000 Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets (1960s-1995) > Bi-Lo (1995-ca. 2000) Location:  2758 PA-414, Canton, PA Photographed:  August 17, 2022 I don't have to say it, you all already know. Today's store tour is a former pitched-roof ACME! You can't miss that roofline. And we can tell that this one is an earlier model, too, because of the beams that slant outwards on the sides where they connect with the roof. Looks like ACME or a later tenant added some covers on some of the front windows on the right side, but mostly the original structure is intact! This store was built as a 14,000 square foot ACME in the 1960s before being sold to Penn Traffic in 1995. It became a Bilo , which because it was franchised remained until 2011 before being sold to Tops. It's been updated with the Tops decor I'm most familiar with, in an attractive but simple renovation. It does have these aisle markers which I don't recognize from any de...

Snapshot: Tops Friendly Markets - Owego, NY

Tops Friendly Markets Opened:  2010 Previous Tenants:  P&C Foods Location:  1145 NY-17C, Owego, NY Photographed:  August 2020 Our final store in New York in this group (we have one more group before we finish New York entirely, but first one quick detour to PA) is this 39,000 square foot former P&C Foods in the far eastern part of Owego. The Price Chopper at the west end of Owego was also built as a Tops, but there would've been a solid 10 years between that store's closing and this store's opening. This is our final store in the Southern Tier of New York, but tomorrow we have one bonus store right over the border in Pennsylvania, over on Grocery Archaeology !
