In Newton Centre, a former Walgreens has become an Asian supermarket. The roughly 10,000 square foot building opened under the same ownership as the Boston-area C-Mart supermarkets , but under the name Newton Asian Mart. The interior is bare-bones, but rather complete. A large seafood counter lines the front part of the left side wall with produce in the middle, packaged meats in the back-left corner, and frozen foods on the right side with a few registers at the front. While it's not particularly visually exciting, and it looks like certain fixtures might be secondhand here, it's the only Asian supermarket in Newton and was busy when I visited on ...

Shaw's Opened: May 22, 2026 Owner: Albertsons Companies Previous Tenants: Victory Markets (late 1990s-2004) > Hannaford (2004-2025) Cooperative: none Location: 193 Boston Post Rd W, Marlborough, MA Photographed:  June 29, 2026 Welcome to the newest Shaw's (and more importantly, happy 4th of July and 250th anniversary of the United States)! What better way to celebrate the birth of our country than to tour a supermarket -- although honestly that's probably how I'd celebrate any occcasion. This 52,000 square foot supermarket was built around the late 1990s as a Victory Market, part of a local chain here in central Mass and southern New Hampshire, and Hannaford acquired the whole chain in 2004. Apparently, the landlord didn't renew Hannaford's lease when it was up, and Shaw's moved in after extensive renovation. This is the first new Shaw's in nearly a decade. I didn't even know this store was being redone, so thanks to Bloggerman who commented on the original post tipping me off. I visited this store in May of this year, but he says that the remodel occurred in 2023 or 2024. I haven't been able to pin down an exact date, as there doesn't appear to have been a grand reopening, and even finding pictures of the remodeled store online has been challenging. That's particularly a shame given that this is a unique Shaw's... ...having received what appears to be a New England-specific version of the Layered Marketplace decor that's gone into several west-coast Albertsons Companies stores (and possibly also a cousin of this decor ).
