TOUR: Weis Markets - Duryea, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2008 Previous Tenants: Mr. Z's (early 1990s-2008) Location: 70 Phoenix St, Duryea, PA Photographed: December 22, 2018 and August 12, 2020 The Weis Markets in Duryea is a bit of a strange store, located somewhat outside of town across railroad tracks from the main street. It's only barely visible from Main Street, but the 40,000 square foot store has been going strong for around 30 years, first as a Mr. Z's (likely built after Weis purchased Mr. Z's, or else renovated very shortly after opening), and then from 2008 to the present, as a Weis. A quick nighttime drive-by shot from 2018. The rest of the pictures are from the summer of 2020. We enter to the grand aisle on the right side of the store. Pharmacy is in the front right corner with deli and seafood in an island opposite produce. Bakery and meat are on the back wall, with grocery aisles behind the deli/seafood island and dairy on the far left side of the store. And I needed to get to this s...

Snapshot: Weis Markets - Plains, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2008 Previous Tenants:  Mr. Z's (1980s-2008) Location:  5 N River St, Plains, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Today's snapshot is a quick look at the Weis Markets in Plains, PA, built in the 1980s as a Mr. Z's IGA, then acquired by Weis in the 90s and ultimately converted to the Weis brand in 2008. Here's a look at the 31,000 square foot store in 2008 as a Mr. Z's! Up next, we're headed to West Pittston and Pittston, about four miles north along the Susquehanna River. Come back to The Market Report tomorrow to see our next tour!

Snapshot: Weis Markets - Brodheadsville, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2009 Previous Tenants:  Mr. Z's (1999-2009) Location:  924 Weir Lake Rd, Brodheadsville, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Across the street from the Brodheadsville ShopRite (and the former Brodheadsville ShopRite ) is this Weis, which at 67,000 square feet is nearly 30,000 square feet smaller than the Brodheadsville ShopRite but is still a fairly large supermarket. It was constructed in 1999 as a Weis-owned Mr. Z's, then converted to Weis 10 years later. Mr. Z's moved from an older location in town in 1999 to build this store, and Weis has done a major interior and exterior renovation since opening (see the previous facade here ). That wraps up our Stroudsburg group, and we have a day off tomorrow but the following day we'll be starting with our next set of stores -- just to the west of here in the Coal Region!

TOUR: Weis Markets - Tannersville, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2009 Previous Tenants:  Insalaco's (1994-1996) > Bi-Lo (1996-1999) > Mr. Z's (2000-2009) Location:  2836 PA-611, Tannersville, PA Photographed:  January 15, 2021 Tannersville is a small town, but it does have a large supermarket -- this Weis, which has been expanded to around 63,000 square feet, from an original 45,000 square foot or so store which opened in 1994 as an Insalaco's, later Bi-Lo and then Mr. Z's, which along with all of the other Mr. Z's was ultimately converted to Weis in 2009. More recently, the outside has been remodeled, but used to look much more like the 90s Insalaco's. The interior was renovated with a simple and early of the Fresh Market decor, likely when the store was switched from Mr. Z's to Weis. We can tell the store is older, partially by the low ceiling and the older fixtures, but it's been fixed up a bit. Although it is definitely an older Weis, it's in very good shape and looks clean and bri...

Snapshot: Weis Markets - Stroudsburg, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2008 Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets (closed by 1980s) > King's IGA (late 1980s-mid 1990s) > Mr. Z's (mid 1990s-2008) Location:  1070 N 9th St, Stroudsburg, PA Photographed:  November 29, 2019 This Stroudsburg Weis looks like a pretty modern store, but it actually goes back as far as the 1950s or so when it was built as an ACME. It later became a King's IGA and then, when Weis purchased both King's and Mr. Z's (two IGA operators in eastern Pennsylvania), the store was converted to Mr. Z's, a banner it kept until 2008. The store has, of course, been renovated and expanded, probably several times, and is now around 52,000 square feet. Weis used to be all alone out here to the west of Stroudsburg, with just a small ALDI not far away, but in 2019 the Stroudsburg ShopRite moved into the Stroud Mall just a quarter mile west. That's tomorrow's tour, so come back to check it out!
