Tops Friendly Markets Opened:  2010 Previous Tenants:  P&C Foods Location:  1145 NY-17C, Owego, NY Photographed:  August 2020 Our final store in New York in this group (we have one more group before we finish New York entirely, but first one quick detour to PA) is this 39,000 square foot former P&C Foods in the far eastern part of Owego. The Price Chopper at the west end of Owego was also built as a Tops, but there would've been a solid 10 years between that store's closing and this store's opening. This is our final store in the Southern Tier of New York, but tomorrow we have one bonus store right over the border in Pennsylvania, over on Grocery Archaeology !

Original Tenant:  A&P Address:  60 Center St - Hornell, NY Opened:  late 1950s/early 1960s Closed:  early 1980s Later Tenants:  Salvation Army Family Store Photographed:  August 2020 Having toured the large supermarket in North Hornell, we are now taking a look at a former store to the southeast of downtown. Now a Salvation Army thrift store, this building appears to be either a low-budget centennial style store , or perhaps a retrofit of an older store. By the way, Salvation Army was closed because I was here on a Sunday. As we see in so many 1950s/60s-era supermarkets, the relatively small (in this case 13,000 square feet) store was built with a gigantic parking lot on a huge property (in this case about 2.5 acres). And the A&P shaped sign is still there on the parking lot! Route 36, or Maple City Drive, is visible on the overpass in the background. My assumption is the raised freeway, which cuts through the downtown...

Wegmans Food Markets Opened:  unknown Previous Tenants:  none Location:  1000 NY-36 N, Hornell, NY Photographed:  August 2020 Despite my general feeling that Wegmans stores are not all that exciting, we've got another tour of their location here in Hornell. At just over 80,000 square feet, it's actually on the smaller side for a Wegmans yet one of the largest supermarkets in the Southern Tier. You enter to a produce department with cheese at the back of the aisle. Cafe, prepared foods, and deli (all of which is far smaller than Wegmans' newest stores) line the first aisle to the right, with meat and seafood along the back wall, bakery then pharmacy/HABA in the first few aisles to the left of produce, and beer, dairy, and frozen at the far end. Tops Friendly Markets Opened:  2001, 2013 Previous Tenants:  Grand Union > Tops > Grand Union Family Markets > Tops Location:  16 W Main St, Hancock, NY Photographed:  May 2018 Contributor:  Retail Regents Our friends over at the Retail Regents blog  submitted these photos of the Grand Union-turned-Tops-turned-Grand Union-turned-Tops in Hancock, NY, right at the Pennsylvania border. Check out their blog for more pictures of this store and lots other across New York! Like many Grand Union-Tops conversions, this one retains many of its original Grand Union elements. One original element is the exterior, which you may recognize as nearly identical to what we saw over at the Newfield Grade A . Very Grand Union front-end! The lower ceiling panel and checkout lights are original to Grand Union's previous renovation. The 12,000 square foot store might be tiny for a chain supermarket, but the next closest supermarkets are a Big M 1...
