Welcome back to the Throggs Neck Fine Fare! I posted this store quite a while ago (the summer of 2020, to be exact) and since my original set of pictures, two significant things have happened. First, I have gotten a much better cell phone camera. And second, the store has finished a rather extensive remodel inside and outside. While it hardly looked dated or unappealing before, it's been beautifully refreshed with a new decor package and some notable upgrades.
On the outside, the storefront has been fixed up with a new paint job, awning, and signage, which is nice. Now about that cell phone camera: you'll clearly see the difference between my 2019 pictures and those I took on Friday...
...not just because of the very attractive renovation here. Let's take a look at what's changed. Of course, the store has been streamlined very significantly, with a more open-feeling produce department/grand aisle despite the fact that the layout hasn't really changed. Deli/bakery are still in the front-right corner, with milk and beer on the right-side wall behind that and produce opposite. Dairy lines the back wall with meat in an alcove in the back-left corner, and frozen foods line the last aisle on the left side.
We have new flooring throughout the store, new decor, some fixture updates, and it looks like new lighting. Here's an interesting change that most people probably wouldn't notice: The store has actually installed a new ceiling, that's kind of a faux-pressed tin look, replacing the old-school standard ceiling tiles that were here before.
In this before-and-after, you can see what I mean about the ceiling. It's a nice, very subtle upgrade that makes the store feel newer.
This renovation has done a particularly nice job of reusing some of the existing features, such as this rounded overhang over the deli, but modernizing them to make the store look new.
Check out those citrus pyramids! The whole store was meticulously well-stocked.
This Fine Fare is owned by Miguel Luna, who is also in the process of taking over and extensively renovating a (now-closed) truly gross Key Food up in the northwestern Bronx. I'm excited to see how that store comes out. This Facebook post shows that the interior of the Riverdale location has been completely gutted -- long overdue -- so I have no doubt it'll be a very nice store once it's open.

So often, a supermarket gets renovated but still kind of feels old because the operators left elements untouched, especially lighting or refrigeration, or sometimes the flooring or ceiling. Here, that's not the case because all of that is new and looking great.
Again, this store wasn't in bad shape previously, but it had last been remodeled around 2009, meaning that it was aging.
Some rearranging on the front-end makes it feel much more open these days...
My guess is that meat was previously where dairy is now, and this corner was backroom or prep space. Dairy was probably in the last aisle with frozen.
It looks like the freezers may not have been replaced, but they also looked rather new in my 2019 pictures.
And wrapping up with a look across the front-end, which has been freshened up with new self-checkouts and new full-service registers.
I'm really pleased to see this store looking so good, and I'm excited to see what the Riverdale location will look like. In the meantime, don't miss today's other posts!
