Before we begin, just a heads up: this was originally posted in September 2017, but was rewritten with new photos in September 2026. Now for the post! The Market Report returns to Larchmont, where we're going to tour one of the very first supermarkets I went to that really opened my eyes to what an incredible supermarket could be. My original tour wasn't terrible, but I've returned for much better pictures and a more extensive look at the store, which I thought was necessary to really do it justice.
So what we're looking at is a roughly 18,000 square foot supermarket, which started out as a Shopwell, part of a local chain based here in Westchester County (that would eventually become The Food Emporium). A&P acquired Shopwell in the 1980s, and switched the brand on this one to A&P around 1990. A&P closed at some point around 2000, with the space becoming a Guitar Center. And once that closed, an addition was put next to the former supermarket building, and that expansion is now a pharmacy. The original supermarket building is still intact, and the space now occupied by DeCicco & Sons. Keep in mind as we travel around this DeCicco that the store is only around 18,000 square feet.
A gorgeous produce department is the first department we enter in the front-right corner of the store, with meat and seafood behind that. Beer lines the back wall. Dairy/frozen are on the left side, and the last aisle on the far left is where DeCicco really shines. That's where the massive cheese department, deli, bakery, and prepared foods are. There's also a cafe seating area and bar on the second floor -- yes, a bar.
This is a high-end supermarket, as
all of the DeCicco & Sons locations are. Not just a gourmet specialty market, but actually a full supermarket where you could reasonably fill a shopping cart and get catering for your big party. It's upscale across the board, though. This is a formula that works, though, as DeCicco had six locations when I first visited this store back in 2017 and now has double that number along with a full-service bar and restaurant and a catering hall.

While the whole store is nice, the vast deli-bakery area is really the star of the show. In the back of the store, we have this incredible cheese island along with other related items like olives and fresh pasta. The service counters then line the outside wall with self-service food bars in the middle.
If you look carefully, you can actually see there's a mezzanine over the deli counter. More on that shortly, as that's where the bar and the seating area are.
Bakery is up in the front corner next to the front-end. This store is oriented facing the street, so its side is to the parking lot and the front-end runs along the wall that now runs along the new pharmacy. Let's head upstairs...
...where the layout is a little bit of a labyrinth to accommodate the layout of the departments below, but this is a great feature to have nonetheless. (
Other newer stores have done the same idea to the extreme.)

This is a spectacular store, and even though DeCicco has opened some more new stores that are even more impressive, this one stays special to me because it was my first introduction to this level of food retailing. I'm glad I've been able to update this post with pictures that match how impressed I was!
