  Continuing the celebration of The Market Report's 10th year! Each month of 2026, I'll be posting a different special feature to celebrate my 10th year of writing this blog. Last month, we took a look at my  favorite posts of 2016-2020 , and in January, we investigated the  history of A&P and its other brands . This month, let's spend some more time on the past with a look at some memorabilia today along with yesterday's historical photos . Tomorrow is one more day of memorabilia! A&P This was a particularly exciting find at an antique store in Gloucester, MA. This tin was sold for $2.99 at A&P's 125th anniversary in 1984. Seeing this, it wasn't a hard decision to make this part of my own collection. The tin depicts a ca. 1912 A&P store, and I love the images around the tin. Giant Food Opened: ca. 2012 Previous Tenants:  none Location:  300 H St NE, Washington, DC Photographed:  June 2019 Contributor:  Alex D. Our contributor Alex D., who lived for a while in this neighborhood of Washington DC, shows us a few pictures of what was her local store when she was here. The store is located right behind Washington DC's Union Station, and about 3/4 of a mile northeast of the Capitol Building. With this small look inside, we see that it's a rather unremarkable version of this decor package, which would've been installed when the store opened around 2012. The store may have been renovated with the newer decor package I mentioned at Seven Corners , but I can't tell for sure. Looks like a nice polished concrete floor but this is a pretty flat version of the decor with a very bland ceiling. Giant Food Opened: 2020 Previous Tenants:  Shoppers Food (closed 2019) Location:  6360 Seven Corners Ctr, Falls Church, VA Photographed:  February 2021 Contributor:  L.D. The Giant Food at Seven Corners in Falls Church is the largest DC area we've seen so far, at over 70,000 square feet. It was a Shoppers Food until 2019, and Giant appears to have opened in 2020. It's a very attractive interior , too, designed by our friends at Off the Wall. Tomorrow we'll be heading to another interesting retail reuse, over on The Independent Edition !

Today we have a quick snapshot of a Giant Food in Bethlehem. I've been inside here, but that was before I started photographing supermarkets. When I returned, I was only going by and didn't have time (or enough interest) to go inside. Giant Food stores tend to be pretty boring in my opinion. This store is located at 3926 Linden St, Bethlehem, PA. Interestingly enough, it was previously a ShopRite which appears to have been owned by Big V Supermarkets before they went bankrupt and Wakefern exited the Lehigh Valley. (I believe there was also at least one ShopRite owned by the Saker family in the Lehigh Valley.) We previously toured the newer ShopRite of Bethlehem here . Here's a quick look at a former Giant Food supermarket in a small shopping center in Washington DC, located on Massatuchetts -- uh, I mean, Massachusetts -- Avenue NW (start the video at 6:10, or watch the whole thing if you like Merrie Melodies!). The store is now a CVS and is located at 4851 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington DC. As a matter of fact, I had initially thought this might have been a modified Grand Union, due to the slanted roof and the arches along the facade, but it was actually a Giant Food.

Another Ethnic Superstore Atlantic Supermarket, Hyattsville, MD You'll notice I've been featuring a lot of ethnic stores lately. Expect that to continue! I've noticed the smaller, ethnic, and urban stores are significantly underrepresented in online supermarket blogging and coverage. This particular store, in Hyattsville, MD, a Washington, DC suburb, has gotten attention because it is a former Giant-MD store with the majority of its decor intact. It's also a pretty great ethnic supermarket. One interesting thing to take into account before touring the store is the demographics of Washington, DC as compared to those of its suburbs. Generally speaking, in the New York City area, the urban areas are the more ethnically diverse and lower-income, while the suburbs are higher-income and less diverse. The exact opposite is true in Washington, DC, meaning that the city stores are primarily extremely boring Safeways, Giants, and Whole Foods. The immediate suburbs, ho...
