Original Grocery Tenant: Shaw's Address: 70 Worcester Rd, Webster, MA Opened:  ca. 1990s Closed:  2014 Later Tenants:  vacant Photographed:  May 1, 2021 and April 16, 2022 Moving from the former Park 'n Shop at the southern end of Webster Plaza to today's store, built around the 1990s as a Shaw's in a 59,000 square foot new building. It's about 10,000 square feet smaller than the Price Chopper in town , and closed just a year after Price Chopper opened , meaning that it's likely Price Chopper put this Shaw's out of business. Webster Plaza was also home to a Big Kmart, which was likely previously a different department store. The Shaw's space remains vacant still, but the Kmart has become a U-Haul facility. It should be noted that there's also a Shaw's in Webster Square Plaza, which is very different from Webster Plaza and is located about 12 miles north in Worcester. Original Grocery Tenant: Park 'n Shop Address: 70 Worcester Rd, Webster, MA Opened:  unknown Closed:  ca. 1990s Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  May 1, 2021 and April 16, 2022 Here we are at the Webster Plaza, a large strip mall just north of downtown Webster! Unfortunately, most of the 150,000 square foot strip mall is vacant -- including its two anchors, previously a Kmart and a Shaw's supermarket. Before the Shaw's was constructed around the 1990s, though, a roughly 30,000 square foot Park 'n Shop was the anchor, today subdivided. You can actually see a picture of the store soon after it closed here . Park 'n Shop originated here in Webster with a small store in downtown, and today has two stores in Dudley and Auburn, about eight miles north. Price Chopper Opened: 2013 Previous Tenants:  none Location:  2 Worcester Rd, Webster, MA Photographed:  October 10, 2020 Welcome to one of the nicest Price Choppers out there! Around 2013, Price Chopper began experimenting with new and higher-end store formats. They shifted from an older format (which we saw in East Stroudsburg ) to multiple newer formats. Webster was among the first -- if not the  first -- store opened with this format and decor package, in April 2013 . (A store in Little Falls, NY followed in the summer.) The year prior, the ultimately unsuccessful small-format Price Chopper Limited would open in Saratoga Springs, and the following year, the truly spectacular Market Bistro would open in Latham, outside Albany. Ultimately, also in 2014, Price Chopper announced they'd be rebranding the chain to the Market 32 format . The 70,000 square foot Webster Price Chopper came just before the Market 32 concept, but clearly shares similarities to the store...
