240 NJ-10, East Hanover, NJ

Original Tenant: Two Guys Address: 240 NJ-10, East Hanover, NJ Opened:  1960s Closed:  early 1980s Later Tenants:  Pathmark (early 1980s-ca. 2000) Photographed:  March 2019 This 121,000 square foot space at the back of the Hanover Commons was built as a Two Guys department store, which closed by the early 80s. At that time, the left 51,000 square feet of the space became a Pathmark while the right half became a Bradlees. This is the side that became Bradlees, and the division between Dick's and Marshalls is approximately the same as where Pathmark/Bradlees would've divided. This Pathmark was replaced around 2000 by the Whippany store to the west and the Livingston store to the east, which opened in 2000 and 2001 respectively. The facade of the strip mall has been remodeled a few times since these new anchors opened; Kam Man Market is also across the street (New Murray Rd). There's not much to see along the front here given the extensive facade renovations, but d...

175 Passaic Ave, Kearny, NJ

Original Tenant: Pathmark Address: 175 Passaic Ave, Kearny, NJ Opened:  1990s Closed:  2012 Later Tenants:  LA Fitness Photographed:  June 2020 Today's snapshot is just across the street from the former Foodtown . This Pathmark was built in the 1990s on the site of the original Two Guys from Harrison (later just Two Guys) department store. Before I really got into retail history, my family would talk about having shopped at Two Guys but I didn't realize it was an extremely local company (being based, of course, in Harrison, NJ, which borders Kearny to the south). That said, my knowledge of this location is somewhat limited so you can see more history here . We can see that today, LA Fitness has kept almost all of Pathmark's facade, just painted it a different color. It actually looks pretty good today! Our next stop is a quarter of a mile south on Passaic Avenue, and is the only remaining supermarket in this immediate area. Head over to The Market Report tomorro...

Memorabilia: Two Guys Walk Into a Department Store...

June 1967 receipt from Two Guys (originally Two Guys from Harrison), a northern New Jersey department store. This receipt was for a $0.40 greeting card purchased at the Union location.

Memorabilia: Two Guys Receipt

Two Guys (originally Two Guys from Harrison, that's right, practically across the street from the Kearny ShopRite ) was a discount de partment store that, at its peak, had " more than 100 locations in upstate New York, eastern Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, and as far as Illinois and California," according to Wikipedia. One of those locations was in Union, NJ, at 1721 Morris Ave. That's where my grandmother bought, on June 17, 1967, a greeting card for $0.40 and $0.02 tax. She then proceeded to put it in this brown paper envelope (which may have actually come from the store) and then put it away, not filling it out or giving it to anyone for the next 52 years. This was soon after she moved into the house she still lives in now. The card, if I'm not mistaken, is still in her attic and still blank.
