The Market of Point Pleasant Beach Opened: July 10, 2026 Owner: Adam Shapiro Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets (1940s-ca. 1960s) > Foodtown (ca. 1960s-2011) > Stop & Shop (2011-2024) Cooperative: Associated Supermarket Group Location: 505 Richmond Ave, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ Photographed: July 16, 2026 Let's get one thing straight before we tour this new store at the Jersey Shore: It's 2026, not 1972. Right? Right. Okay. Keep that in mind. So here we are in Point Pleasant Beach! It's a shore town, about halfway between Asbury Park and Seaside Heights, and home to Jenkinson's Boardwalk , which you might've heard of. It's also home to this supermarket, which faithfully served the town's business district as the only grocer for decades. It was an ACME starting around the 1940s, becoming a Foodtown about 20 or 30 years later. By the 1970s, it was a Norkus Foodtown, which sold all their stores to Stop & Shop in 2011. Foodtown Opened: July 2026 Owner: Abed and/or Elayyan families Previous Tenants: Rite Aid Cooperative: Allegiance Retail Location: 6900 9th Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: July 15, 2026 A new Foodtown! Even though the Allegiance Retail cooperative doesn't seem to be in the greatest shape lately (you can read more of my musings here , if you're so inclined), they've still had a couple of notable store openings lately. That includes those two in Philadelphia but also a couple of Foodtown locations in New York. Most recently, Brooklyn Harvest Markets has opened a Foodtown in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. This 9,000 square foot supermarket was previously a Rite Aid and underwent an extensive renovation to transform it into a Foodtown affiliated with Brooklyn Harvest Markets (which also has a location in Bay Ridge, formerly The Food Emporium ). Key Food Supermarkets Opened: May 16, 2026 Owner: Ricky & Lenny Hernandez Previous Tenants: none; Foodtown > CTown previously on property Cooperative: Key Food Stores Location: 126 Main St, Matawan, NJ Photographed: May 28, 2026 Time for another new store from Key Food! (The mess going on in Oakland Gardens , I mean the transition going on in Oakland Gardens, is notable but doesn't actually result in the cooperative having any new  stores.) Here in Matawan, which is at the far north end of the Jersey Shore -- I suppose it's not even really part of the shore -- Key Food member Ricky Hernandez has opened a new store with his son Lenny (ownership via Asbury Park Press ). The Hernandezes also run Tropical supermarkets in north and central Jersey, and are preparing to open a SuperFresh in Long Branch. At just 7700 square feet, this Key Food is truly tiny.
