TOUR: LIDL - Hazlet, NJ

LIDL Opened: 2018 Previous Tenants:  none Location:  2973 NJ-35, Hazlet, NJ Photographed:  January 2021 Our final Hazlet store is also one of its newest. Just across the highway from the even-newer ALDI , this 38,000 square foot store was built about three years ago in LIDL's first push to enter the US. Later stores have been scaled back in design and occupy other closed supermarkets, such as Park Ridge and Garwood . This store is of the same model as Union . We enter to produce in the front of the store with bakery, the store's only fresh department, on the right side. Dairy/deli packaged items line the rest of the right side wall. As we can see, the shelving stays at a pretty low level, allowing for a great sightline across the store. Dedicated readers know that I am not particularly a fan of LIDL, but these earlier US buildings are really beautiful. We can also get a good sense of the sloping ceiling here. I do love any ceiling that's not just a regular flat ceiling,...

3057 NJ-35, Hazlet, NJ

Original Tenant: unknown Address: 3057 NJ-35, Hazlet, NJ Opened:  unknown Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  99 Cent Dreams (??-ca. 2010) > ALDI (ca. 2010-2019) Photographed:  January 2021 In 2019, the 20,000 square foot ALDI in Hazlet moved across the street into 24,000 square feet of a former Pathmark . Since there is room to expand in this space, I assume the move was more about location in the newly renovated Hazlet Town Center and moving out of the Hazlet Plaza whose anchor, Toys R Us, had just closed. (It's since become a Harbor Freight Tools and a Goodwill.) After ALDI and Toys R Us moved out, the strip mall was remodeled. The inside of the former ALDI was also cleared out, though some parts remain. Here we can see the former entrance/exit. ALDI decals remain on the entrance doors. We can see the ALDI in progress of being cleared out. It's possible some of the fixtures from this store, which was not that old, were brought over to the new store. Carts seem t...

Snapshot: ALDI - Hazlet, NJ

ALDI Opened: 2019 Previous Tenants:  Pathmark Location:  3020 NJ-35, Hazlet, NJ Photographed:  January 2021 Our next Hazlet store is the very new 24,000 square foot ALDI in the Hazlet Town Center! It replaced part of a former 45,000 square foot Pathmark. Acme Style grabbed the strip pre-renovation (it's been very nicely revitalized) back in 2017 . Here we can see most of the Pathmark space with a newly renovated facade. The store moved in here from a smaller location across the street, which you can check out in today's other post here . Tomorrow we're going to see our final Hazlet store just across the highway here on The Market Report!

TOUR: ShopRite - Hazlet, NJ

ShopRite of Hazlet Owner: Richard Saker / Saker Supermarkets Opened:  2013 Previous Tenants:  Foodtown Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  3120 NJ-35, Hazlet, NJ Photographed:  January 2021 It's time to tour what I think is our very first Saker ShopRite! I know I've mentioned this owner's stores previously, and we just recently saw a quick look at the one in Aberdeen about two and a half miles away. I don't know how other folks feel about the Saker ShopRites, but I must say that to me, their newest stores (from around 2000 to the present) are simply some of the best supermarkets I have ever been to. The nearly 90,000 square foot store replaced a short-lived Foodtown owned by Circus Fresh Foods, which in turn had replaced Service Merchandise and JM Fields stores. The store moved from an older, 40,000 square foot location on route 36 just to the north. We enter in the glass foyer area, a common feature in the Saker stores that has been revised a few t...
