It's where the bay and its islands meet the mainland, and where the Penobscot River meets the bay. If you're driving north on route 1 through this area, you actually have to briefly leave the mainland to enter Verona Island via the incredibly scenic Penobscot Narrows Bridge , then you reenter the mainland just next to this Hannaford. A supermarket of around 26,000 square feet, this Bucksport Hannaford appears to have been built in the early 1960s as a Red & White (though generally Red & White stores didn't build new, so it's possible there was another cha...

Today's memorabilia post is dedicated to brands used largely by independent grocers, starting with the IGA brand itself... IGA ...and spice tins, of course. I would estimate these date back to the 1960s. IGA changed to its current logo by the late 1970s. Spotted outside a small bookstore in Lewisburg, PA, was a box of IGA instant oatmeal -- okay, it was full of books, but once long ago it had IGA-brand oatmeal! An unusual color scheme was used here on this ca. 1950s IGA allspice tin, spotted next to a Red & White tin. And that brings us to our next brand! Red & White We've discussed Red & White before, including recently , and the brand was distributed to the Red & White and independent stores. In fact, it continues to be, although it is harder to find these days. Original Grocery Tenant: Red & White Food Stores Address: 46 Tolland Green, Tolland, CT Opened:  unknown Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  Tolland Red & White Gift Shop Photographed:  November 27, 2022 The small town of Tolland, CT -- 18 miles northeast of Hartford and 12 miles south of Massachusetts -- today has a very attractive-looking Big Y , but once was served by the Tolland Red & White. Red & White , for those who are not familiar, is a very loose group of small independent grocers, once a larger cooperative with locations across the US and Canada but now really just a brand distributed by The Federated Group from the Chicago area. It's not uncommon to see small convenience stores, bodegas, and greengrocers in the New York City area selling Red & White products, but those come from Federated via the Jetro wholesaler in New York, through their FoodBase program . On the town green in Tolland, a roughly 1000 square foot store retains the name...

 Possibly the less-famous band led by Tom Robert? Okay, let's get into our third day of matchbooks with this specimen from the defunct southeastern chain . Again, it would be fascinating to know how this St Louis/New Orleans-area chain's matchbook ended up in Maine. Of course, their reach was much wider than that (check out that Wikipedia article for more details), but it's not a chain I'm familiar with. In fact, since it was related to the Loblaw's chain up north, any chance this might have been given out -- maybe even accidentally -- at a Loblaw's? Not too much to see here as far as design goes, just the logo (which is a creative inversion of the Loblaw's L). Heading into more familiar territory, we check out the Providence Public Market Co., whose store would've been here (but of course has been demolished). Original Tenant:  Red & White Food Stores Address:  3736 NY-54A, Branchport, NY Opened:  unknown Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  Crooked Lake Mercantile Photographed:  August 2020 This touristy-centered general store type thing was previously a Red & White Food Store. How do I know? Because the signs are still up on the front and side of the building! Crooked Lake Mercantile, which now occupies the space, is one of just five businesses, I believe, in this "downtown" area of Branchport. Before we visit Hammondsport, at the southern tip of the Y of Keuka Lake, we're going to take a quick detour inland about eight miles to Prattsburgh tomorrow over on The Independent Edition !

We're moving just around the corner from yesterday's Makkah Medina Supermarket  to see a small grocery store under the name Apple Valley Supermarket. This store was previously under the name Frank's Meat Market, and appears to be a member of Red & White FoodBase. It's located at 2660 Valentine Ave, Bronx, NY. Photographed June 2018

Jumping back over to Hudson at 56th, we've got a quick Snapshot of a bodega that's calling itself a supermarket. But with no frozen foods and very little produce or fresh meats, I can't consider it a supermarket. Hard to tell exactly what it used to say under the KEA decal.   Maybe "Supermercado OLA"? While this store was incredibly depressing inside, it did lead me to discover a (defunct?) cooperative, Red & White Food Base. I know absolutely nothing about Red & White Food Base, except for the fact that it uses the same logo as Red & White products from The Federated Group . KEA, despite displaying R&W FB posters in the windows, did not carry any Red & White products. Any input as to what Food Base is would be welcomed!
