The Market Report

Now today's post is an example of when it can be quite handy to know the date photographed ! I originally photographed Food Fair in Newark in July 2017 , but I returned after I heard that Food Fair had switched from General Trading to Key Food. They were getting rid of the last of the Parade (General Trading) storebrand items with a 50% off sale as the new Key Food and Urban Meadow products were being added to the shelves. I got a roll of aluminum foil for $0.49 -- not bad! Photographed March 2018

White Plains, NY-based Krasdale Foods, operators of Bravo and CTown Supermarkets, has registered a trademark on a newly redesigned logo. Although the logo is not yet in use for the corporate website or on private label products, it is likely to be introduced in the coming months. The logo change comes as the wholesale company approaches the end of its 100th year in business. What does everyone think of the new logo? I think it's simple and clean, although I would have liked to see a period after "EST"! The old logo was a little too similar to Pathmark for me, and the "s" just didn't work.

Interrupting our look at Carrboro, NC's possible former supermarkets is another America's Choice product, again courtesy of the Elizabeth Pathmark. The bottom of an America's Choice facial tissue box. Needless to say, the tissues were as pleasant to use as sandpaper.

A few weeks ago, we saw the label of a Pathmark white vinegar bottle. Now we're going to see another Pathmark product from probably a little earlier, between 2000 and 2005. This is the front panel of a box of cotton balls. I'm not so sure about that picture of the cotton balls in the bottom right corner -- last time I checked, that's not exactly what cotton balls look like!

Back in the good old days, before A&P, the Pathmark brand was known as a good alternative to name brands. Then America's Choice came in and no one seemed to like it very much. This is the label from a bottle of Pathmark white vinegar probably sold not too long before the A&P acquisition. I don't have an exact date on it, but my guess would be about 2005. Unfortunately, I never had the bottle, just the label.

I have a bunch of memorabilia to post, so for the next few weeks we'll be seeing something different every Wednesday. Today we're looking at a package of ShopRite bandages... While I can't date this exact package, it's from between 1994 and 2002. I found it at my grandmother's house. Her local ShopRite opened in 1994 and the logo was changed in 2002. Front Side Back Side Top Far superior to the current storebrand bandage package ShopRite uses, if you ask me. I love that font they use for the "Sheer Plastic Strips".

These young whippersnappers today... OK, not like that. But I did come across a reminder of A&P in my grandmother's house... Hmm. Somehow the idea of buying "small garbage" isn't overly appealing to me. Maybe it's just me. Of course, Greenway products are now available at Foodtown and other Allegiance affiliates. But they're not the original ones distributed by OnPoint, Inc at 1 Paragon Dr in Montvale, NJ!

While visiting the Wilbur Chocolate museum in Lititz, PA - and believe it or not, not buying any chocolate at all - I saw these old storebrand tins for cocoa in the museum. Jewel T: A&P: Asco (American Stores / later Acme) Grand Union: These were a pretty cool find!
