Special Report: CTown Supermarkets - Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY

CTown Supermarkets Opened: 2025 Owner:  unknown Previous Tenants:  Rite Aid Cooperative:  Krasdale Foods Location:  7808 Flatlands Ave, Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY Photographed:  February 11, 2025 The ongoing demise -- or at least contraction -- of Rite Aid and the other drugstore chains has been a major boon for independent supermarkets. The latest example (there's been too many to count, at this point) is here in Canarsie, Brooklyn, where an 11,000 square foot former Rite Aid has reopened as a CTown Supermarket. CTown was a block east on Flatlands Avenue, and it appears the owners have held onto that store even as they open this one, but it's now branded Bravo. (The Bravo is only 5000 square feet, so it's quite small.) Here's a look at this store in progress back in October. Produce is on the right side of the store in the first aisle, with meat on the back wall and dairy/frozen on the left side. A deli and a seafood counter -- not yet open when I visited during ...

Special Report: CTown Supermarkets (future) - Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY

CTown Supermarkets Opening:  TBA Owner:  unknown Previous Tenants:  Rite Aid Cooperative:  Krasdale Foods Location:  7808 Flatlands Ave, Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: September 6, 2024 Welcome to Canarsie! The southeastern Brooklyn neighborhood abuts the Jamaica Bay at the southern tip, but here on the northern end, Flatlands Avenue is the main thoroughfare. A CTown Supermarket has long been located at Flatlands and East 80th Street , but that store was switched to Bravo -- a different brand within the same cooperative, Krasdale Foods -- as a store one block over at East 79th Street is preparing to open as a CTown . The former Rite Aid that CTown is moving into is just 11,000 square feet, but their existing location is even smaller at just 5300 square feet. Because of the brand change, I think it's likely the existing location will continue operating even after the new CTown opens. There are a few small grocers along Flatlands, including two at Flatlands...

Snapshot: Key Food Supermarkets - Canarsie East, Brooklyn, NY

This is one of those annoying nondescript stores that's been a Key Food for a long time and appears to have a custom decor package original to Key Food. So basically there's very little way to tell what this store was before Key Food, if anything. I don't recognize it at all, not even a little. Anyone know what this may have been? This is a store I'd love to get back to and see the inside of, but it's not all that exciting honestly. It's not old enough to be exciting and it's not new enough to be exciting. At the same time, I know the clock is ticking before this store will be totally redone. Anyway, that's sure a different style of writing a post! And this store is located just up Rockaway Parkway from the Golden Mango we saw yesterday at 2066 Rockaway Pkwy.

TOUR: Golden Mango Supermarkets - Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY

Okay, be ready for some very sloppy history reporting here. This store was a Waldbaum's until somewhere in the neighborhood of 2005-2007, when it changed ownership and became a Golden Mango Supermarket. I do know the store was at one point owned by a Korean owner (the writer of an article about businesses in Canarsie, a predominantly black neighborhood, seemed to be shocked to find that the store's owner was Korean. Uh... do your homework ). At some time around 2010, the store changed hands again and was taken over by either Raul Acosta or Andres Ferreira (who owns most Ideal Food Basket stores in New York City) and joined the NSA, or Neighborhood Supermarket Association, cooperative, which was transformed into Ideal/America's Food Basket. Then, by the summer of 2019, the store had gone through what seemed to be an extensive renovation and expansion, and the store's banner may have been switched from AFB Golden Mango to just straight Ideal Food Basket. Andres Fer...

Snapshot: Food World Supermarket - Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY

Today's snapshot is the Food World Supermarket at 935 E 107th St at Flatlands Ave in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn. This one is in closest proximity to the Food Bazaar at Louisana Avenue and Flatlands Avenue, and you could have an argument whether this is technically East New York or Canarsie. Personally, I think it's Canarsie based on very little (but it is to the west of Fresh Creek, if only barely, and Canarsie is decidedly west of Fresh Creek. I don't know much about the history of this store other than the fact that it used to be a Met Foodmarket.
