Key Food Supermarkets - Bronx, NY (Wakefield)

Key Food Supermarkets Opened: ca. 1990s Owner:  Sal Bonavita Previous Tenants: Pioneer (1980-ca. 1990s) Cooperative: Key Food Stores Location: 4171 White Plains Rd, Bronx, NY Photographed:  March 8, 2019 and March 27, 2024 Before we begin, just a heads up: this was originally posted on August 24, 2020, but was rewritten with new photos in July 2026. Now for the post! This 9200 square foot supermarket was previously a Pioneer until the late 1990s, when Sal Bonavita joined the Key Food cooperative. Today, the Bonavita chain (which has three stores in this part of the Bronx) runs under the name Bonavita Market with secondary Key Food branding. This is one of two Key Food stores on White Plains Road, the other is a former Met Foods down in Allerton. Above is the storefront from my original 2019 picture, and now let's take a look at the store's present-day appearance. The exterior got a fresh coat of paint around 2020, and that also seems to be when the interior was redone ...

Special Report: Shop Fresh Food Marketplace - Bronx, NY (Wakefield)

Shop Fresh Food Marketplace Opened: April 10, 2026 Owner:  Neidy Marte Previous Tenants:  A&P (closed between 1977 and 1980) > Pioneer (ca. early 1980s) > furniture store > Rite Aid Cooperative:  Associated Supermarket Group Location:  4159 White Plains Rd, Bronx, NY Photographed:  April 24, 2026 Another new opening from ASG (see these two yesterday) is this Shop Fresh Food Marketplace, the fifth Shop Fresh store and latest addition to the growing cooperative. This was a former Rite Aid -- I know, big surprise there -- of around 10,000 square feet, but it was actually built as an A&P. In the early 1980s, it became a Pioneer. Pioneer is now part of ASG, so in a way they're returning to the space they once occupied (different store owners, of course). Produce is in the first aisle on the left side of the store, with dairy on the back wall. Frozen is in the second-to-last aisle on the right side, and meat is in the last aisle with service butche...

Look Inside: Foodtown - Wakefield, Bronx, NY

This store opened as a Met Foodmarket in 1985 under owner Bernabe Cabrena, who in 2011 transitioned to Foodtown. It's a great looking store, and even looked pretty good as a Met way back when. It's clear this store's owner and management take pride in it. My pictures are not wonderful inside, but here we go. At 10,500 square feet, the supermarket is not enormous but feels larger due to its spacious produce department and first aisle (look at those sightlines -- all the way to the back of the store!), plus it has a parking lot and feels more suburban, as you get into these northern neighborhoods of the Bronx. Morning stocking in full swing at the time of my visit. I like the diagonal checkerboard tile because it's not overwhelming, but a nice touch to tie in with the decor. The aisle markers don't quite match the decor, so they might be slightly newer. Perhaps the decor comes from the Met Foodmarkets era, and the aisle markers would have been plac...

Coming Soon!

Our next group of stores in the Bronx is along White Plains Road! We start at the southern part of the neighborhood of Allerton, following White Plains Road (a major through street) through Williamsbridge , Olinville, and Wakefield, seeing eight stores along that stretch. White Plains Road, by the way, starts at the far south end of Soundview , extending past the Bronx Botanical Garden, becoming 1st Street when it crosses into Mount Vernon , then finally petering out and ending just north of the former Western Beef in Mount Vernon . We're only traveling along a small fraction of the street's length, but we'll be starting tomorrow with a snapshot on The Independent Edition !
