Foodtown Opened: July 2026 Owner: Abed and/or Elayyan families Previous Tenants: Rite Aid Cooperative: Allegiance Retail Location: 6900 9th Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: July 15, 2026 A new Foodtown! Even though the Allegiance Retail cooperative doesn't seem to be in the greatest shape lately (you can read more of my musings here , if you're so inclined), they've still had a couple of notable store openings lately. That includes those two in Philadelphia but also a couple of Foodtown locations in New York. Most recently, Brooklyn Harvest Markets has opened a Foodtown in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. This 9,000 square foot supermarket was previously a Rite Aid and underwent an extensive renovation to transform it into a Foodtown affiliated with Brooklyn Harvest Markets (which also has a location in Bay Ridge, formerly The Food Emporium ). Tiller & Rye Opened: 2015 Owner:  Sarah Morneault and Lindsey Levesque Previous Tenants:  Rite Aid > Brewer Discount Furniture Cooperative:  none Location:  20 S Main St, Brewer, ME Photographed:  June 13, 2022 I'll stop beating a dead horse someday soon, but there are so many supermarkets that have opened up in former Rite Aids and other drugstores in the last five years or so. Here's one from a bit before the current trend. This former Rite Aid in downtown Brewer briefly became a furniture store after closing, but since 2015 has been Tiller & Rye, a roughly 10,000 square foot specialty market. The exterior doesn't have a particularly distinct Rite Aid look, but my best guess is that the drugstore designed this facade to match the somewhat small-town setting. Neither the furniture store nor Tiller & Rye redid the outside extensively, but the inside has been remodeled. And as you can already tell from the outside, this is no typical supermarket...

I myself have been very busy, so I've been behind in both visiting new stores and posting about them. (Don't worry, no interruptions to the regularly scheduled programming .) So now I'm trying to catch up -- but I'm sitting on more than a dozen newsworthy stores that I've been to but haven't posted about yet. Let's start to fix that with this weekend's NYC posts! You may recall this closed East Village Rite Aid, which hadn't yet gotten a brand when I posted about it back in December . Turns out, it's a Metro Acres Market -- one of only three under the brand, joining locations on the Lower East Side and in Schuylerville (there was previously another in Washington Heights that became a Fine Fare )....
