There aren't too many stores out there that closed way back then and are only now reopening as a supermarket, but that's the case here in Hackensack. Pathmark built this Hackensack location (one of two -- the other is across town and now a 99 Ranch Market ) in the 1970s, closing it in 2015. The store was around 58,000 square feet, and while Planet Fitness opened up in about half of it in 2020, the other half remained vacant until G Mart, a local chain of Chinese supermarkets, began their renovation to move in. LIDL Opened: July 30, 2025 Owner:  Schwarz Group Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  none Location:  80 River St, Hackensack, NJ Photographed:  August 1, 2025 Located on the site of the former Daily Record newspaper building, LIDL has opened its latest New Jersey store in a new mixed-use development. It's one of their relatively few new build stores lately, as most of their focus is on converting existing buildings, but it's nice to see a brand-new building. At 23,500 square feet, it's not that large. But it feels spacious and modern, and the new building it's in helps. It's a standard LIDL layout with produce and bakery in the front-left corner, then deli and meat/seafood lining the first aisle on the left side. Dairy lines the back aisle and part of the last aisle on the right side, with frozen in the front half of the last aisle. Since then, Planet Fitness has opened up shop in part of the space, with around 40,000 square feet left over on the right side. Very recently, Asian supermarket G Mart has signed a lease for the space and has begun renovations. I first visited the former Pathmark in late 2021, long before G Mart announced their intentions to move in. Planet Fitness was up and running, but plenty of Pathmark relics remain.
