This is a barrel-roof Centennial store that has been disguised by a new facade, but you can still see the original facade behind it, with all Centennial elements removed. It's in the center of New City, which is certainly not a large city, but does have a Grand Union-turned- DeCicco Family Markets in the next strip mall north on Main Street and then a large ShopRite a little farther north than that. This 14,000 square foot store likely competed with the Grand Union next door for many years, though both are now gone. This photo was taken from the parking lot of Back to Earth Natural Foods, which is next door and which we'll see tomorrow on The Independent Edition !

ShopRite of New City Owner:  Inserra Supermarkets Opened:  unknown Previous Tenants:  unknown Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  66 N Main St, New City, NY Photographed:  March 2019 Returning to New City (we've been here before ) for a tour of the 54,000 square foot ShopRite in the center of town. Owned by the Inserra family, it sports the same facade that the since-renovated, (in)famous West Milford location did. That nightmare of a store has since been remodeled beautifully inside and outside, and it's one of the first stores we're going to see in New Jersey. New City is by no means a nightmare, but it has been maintained better than West Milford. An enclosed foyer runs along the front of the store, with entrances and exits at either end. You enter on the left side to the first aisle, with bakery to the left of the entrance and prepared foods to the right. Produce is in the first aisle with floral at the back. Deli and ...

Continuing our former Grand Union trend, here we have DeCicco Family Market in New City, NY. There are actually two branches of the DeCicco chain, both of which operate supermarkets under the Krasdale cooperative in this general area. This one, DeCicco Family Markets, seems to be the generally more old-fashioned side of the operation. Both are very upscale stores (this store happened to be crazy expensive, but I don't know if that's universally true for all their locations). The Grand Union sign would have likely been on the wall to the left of the awning originally. You walk into a small but well-stocked produce department. The fake windows on the walls give the store a kind of friendly but also kind of cheesy feel. You can see along the front-end here with GU's signature light box over the checkouts. Again, I'm not quite sure whether the "streetlights" are cool or too fake. The same goes for the ceiling painted like the sky with clouds! T...
