The Market Report

I hope you've enjoyed the far northeastern neighborhoods of Boston over the last few days. If you like what you saw, great! We have plenty more coastal areas of New England still to visit north of Boston. But before we get there, we do have a bit more of Boston and its suburbs to see. Coming Up Next Back Bay and Longwood are our next stops, including the Kenmore Square area between those two neighborhoods. These are, like the nearby North and West Ends, historic and generally affluent areas, and there are several large institutions here. The main library, Prudential Center, and famed Newbury Street area are in Back Bay, while Longwood and the Kenmore Square area is home to Boston University, Northeastern University, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Children's Hospital, the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, and dare I forget Fenway P...

East Boston, which is just next to Boston's Logan Airport, has several sub-neighborhoods. To the west is Maverick Square, roughly in the area where we saw the Shaw's . Eagle Hill is to the north, but unfortunately I haven't photographed any stores there. As far as I can tell, the central area is referred to simply as East Boston, and out east of that is Orient Heights, which actually has a beach. East Boston, Logan Airport, Orient Heights, the independent town of Winthrop, and Deer Island are on this peninsula extending south of Revere, one of the suburbs north of Boston. We're going to check out the stores of Maverick Square, central East Boston, and Orient Heights. Shaw's Opened: 1997 Owner:  Albertsons Companies Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  none Location:  246 Border St, Boston, MA Photographed:  July 22, 2019 There are only two Shaw's stores within the city of Boston these days, this one and the Hyde Park location . (Other locations that have been here over time have converted to Star Market .) Both Hyde Park and East Boston are neighborhoods rather separated from the dense, urban city center, and so it makes sense that they'd have the more suburban-style Shaw's locations. Plus, both are generally blue-collar areas, and Star Market these days has a higher-end positioning . The 50,000 square foot Shaw's on Border Street was constructed in 1997 and has a layout similar to certain other Shaw's of that era (see Shrewsbury , for example, or it's nearly identical to one in Nashua, NH). There's nothing like some fantastic Italian imported cheeses or salami, and that's just what the Salumeria Italiana in Boston's North End has to offer (pictured above). But while we've been here in the West End and North End, we've seen a couple other stores, including some great historical ones and a brand-new Star Market . Check them all out in this map below. Note that there's one store in gray on the map, the DeLuca's Market on Charles Street , a small gourmet grocer that I haven't visited. There's another DeLuca's that we'll see shortly!
