1199 Texas Palmyra Hwy, Honesdale, PA

Original Grocery Tenant: Giant Market Address: 1199 Texas Palmyra Hwy, Honesdale, PA Opened:  ca. 1972 Closed:  1993 Later Tenants:  Insalaco's > subdivided Photographed:  May 28, 2023 This 25,000 square foot store was built as a Giant Market at the eastern end of the Route 6 Mall at some point around 1972 before becoming an Insalaco's. Insalaco's then moved to a former Kmart, before ultimately becoming a Weis . As AFB pointed out a few months ago (which I didn't know), there were actually four  Giant chains at one point or another. Giant-MD and Giant-PA, of course, both of which are now owned by Ahold. There was also a chain in the Binghamton area, mostly acquired by Weis; and yet another (which I didn't realize was separate from the Binghamton chain), based in Scranton and at its peak, with 25 locations. In 1971, the Scranton-based Giant Market grew from 20 to 25 stores with the acquisition of five Food Fair stores. The chain declared bankruptcy in 1983,...

TOUR: Gerrity's ShurSave - South Main, Scranton, PA

Gerrity's ShurSave Owner: Joyce Fasula Opened:  1980 - 2022 Previous Tenants:  Giant Market (1951 - after 1967) > Short Stop Food Market (late 1970s - 1980) Later Tenants:  Gerrity's The Fresh Grocer (2022- ) Cooperative:  ShurSave Location:  702 S Main Ave, Scranton, PA Photographed:  August 12, 2020 Welcome to the original Gerrity's Supermarket! At 25,000 square feet, this is also the smallest, having been built in 1951 as a Giant Market. The store closed at some point after 1967, later becoming the Short Stop Food Market by the late 1970s and closing in 1980. Gerrity's, previously a butcher shop, moved in and opened their first supermarket here in 1980. (Incidentally, this was also the first store to be converted to The Fresh Grocer when Gerrity's joined Wakefern in 2022.) We enter to bakery and produce in the front right corner with meat and dairy in the first aisle (I commented on the meat being up front on our last Gerrity's , which was also a Gia...

TOUR: Gerrity's ShurSave - East Mountain, Scranton, PA

Gerrity's ShurSave Owner: Joyce Fasula Opened:  1994 - 2022 Previous Tenants:  Giant Market (closed 1994) Later Tenants:  Gerrity's The Fresh Grocer (2022- ) Cooperative:  ShurSave Location:  320 Meadow Ave, East Mountain, Scranton, PA Photographed:  August 12, 2020 On the edge of an otherwise fairly residential neighborhood in southeastern Scranton, we encounter today's Gerrity's! It's around 36,000 square feet and housed in a former Giant Market location. More detail on the Scranton-based chain soon. We can feel inside that this store is older, but it's definitely been updated nicely. We enter to the grand aisle with bakery in the front right corner, meat on the right side, produce on the left side, and deli on the back. This is the only Gerrity's I can think of that has the meat department right up front like this, making me wonder if maybe the layout is left at least in part from Giant Market. Gerrity's opened here in 1994 and in 2022 converted the ...

Gerrity's ShurSave Owner: Joyce Fasula Opened:  before 1998 - 2022 Previous Tenants:  Giant Market (1961-ca. 1970) > Warehouse Foods (opened 1973) > Bargains Galore (1980-after 1984) Later Tenants:  Gerrity's The Fresh Grocer (2022- ) Cooperative:  ShurSave Location:  4015 Birney Ave, Moosic, PA Photographed:  August 12, 2020 Welcome to Moosic, our first town in the Scranton area in the northern part of the Wyoming Valley (or, as I defined it the other day , to the northeast of interstate 476)! These days, the store is a Gerrity's Fresh Grocer, and was previously a Gerrity's ShurSave from the 1990s to 2022 when the store was converted. Prior to Gerrity's the store was a Giant Market, later Warehouse Foods and then a Bargains Galore discount supermarket, with other locations at 1101 Moosic St in Scranton (now a CVS), where the Luzerne Gerrity's is now, somewhere in the Narrows Shopping Center in Edwardsville, and somewhere around 41-53 Spring St in Wi...
