Original Tenant:  ACME Markets Address: 4340 US-130, Willingboro, NJ Opened:  1970s Closed:  1993 Later Tenants:  Grand Market Place Photographed:  January 2021 Folks, this was not an ACME. I didn't do my homework before coming here and thought that this blue awning was the blue Super Saver awning from the former ACME. Acme Style's 2011 post of this store and the others in Willingboro clarifies that, in fact, this was the entrance to the indoor mall. The ACME was in the space to the far left of the mall , while this is roughly in the middle. Today, what was the Village Mall is now the Grand Market Place, a somewhat strange indoor flea market, and the ACME moved just basically next door to a site that originally held a Food Fair in 1993. Tomorrow, we head on to Edgewater Park for two supermarkets on 130 -- the former Pathmark here on Grocery Archaeology, and another one just south on 130 on The Market Report !

One was located in the Village Mall, which I have brief coverage of today here and which Acme Style more extensively wrote up back in 2011; the other was located across town (near the former ShopRite ) at 498 Beverly Rancocas Rd. By the way, I wrote rather extensively about the history of Willingboro on the former ShopRite post, which is worth a read over, but notice the fact that this store is located on Levitt Parkway, of course named after William Levitt who designed the development. Levittown, NJ was the third constructed, after New York and Pennsylvania, on the land of Willingborough Township, opening in 1958. And in 1959, the township officially became Levittown Township. The New Jersey township was notable among the Levittowns due to its central position in efforts to integrate housing: Levittown, NJ was intended to be an all-white community, and a lawsuit by a Black applicant to live in the community who was rejected sparked the creation of an integration program in Levitt's development company.
