Co-op Food Stores Opened:  2010 Owner: cooperatively owned Previous Tenants: Grand Union (ca. 1960s-2001) > P&C Foods (2001-2009) Cooperative:  National Co-op Grocers Location: 209 Maple St, White River Junction, VT Photographed:  July 6, 2023 It's time to tour another co-op supermarket, but this one has a twist. While many New England co-ops are recently-built facilities , this one has a long history as a grocer. In fact, Grand Union built this 17,000 square foot store back in the 1960s or so, and it appears to have lasted right up until the chain went under. In 2001, it became a P&C Foods, part of the Penn Traffic company, which closed this store in 2009. (Most locations went to Tops; for some reason, this one didn't, possibly because Tops has a limited presence in Vermont.) Tops Friendly Markets Opened:  2010 Previous Tenants:  P&C Foods Location:  1145 NY-17C, Owego, NY Photographed:  August 2020 Our final store in New York in this group (we have one more group before we finish New York entirely, but first one quick detour to PA) is this 39,000 square foot former P&C Foods in the far eastern part of Owego. The Price Chopper at the west end of Owego was also built as a Tops, but there would've been a solid 10 years between that store's closing and this store's opening. This is our final store in the Southern Tier of New York, but tomorrow we have one bonus store right over the border in Pennsylvania, over on Grocery Archaeology !

Photographed:  August 2020 The only former supermarket I was able to track down in Penn Yan is this 1950s-era flat roofed ACME, now subdivided. It's likely that this store was taken over by Penn Traffic before the existing P&C building, now Tops , was built as a replacement for this location. Here's a look at what the store would've originally looked like. Tops Friendly Markets Opened:  2010 Previous Tenants:  P&C Foods Location:  321 Liberty St, Penn Yan, NY Photographed:  August 2020 It's time for our final Tops tour of the Finger Lakes! We're at the northeastern tip of Keuka Lake in the largest town on the lake, Penn Yan, where we saw an independent store yesterday. Keuka Lake is different from the other Finger Lakes because it's Y-shaped. At the northeastern corner is Penn Yan, with Branchport (where we're headed next) at the northwestern corner, and Hammondsport at the southern tip. Yet another Tops converted from P&C, just like Skaneateles , Waterloo , and Watkins Glen . This one is much like Skaneateles as it's very recently renovated and looking great, and at 38,000 square feet, it's a fairly large supermarket. Ah, I love the fire exit floor plans!
