Welcome to Baltimore, almost! We're about 12 miles southwest of the city in Jessup to visit the MOM's Organic Market at Columbia East Marketplace. We've seen a few of their stores, and toured the Cherry Hill location . This looks like a fairly large MOM's store, especially since the website mentions it was expanded in 2019. By the way, here's what the outside looks like. As we saw in Cherry Hill, the store is extremely spacious with wide concourses between all the aisles. Above, I believe we're looking across the back wall of the store, and in the first shot we're looking towards the back from the front of the store. We are continuing our northbound trek from Charleston, South Carolina to [redacted], Maine (ooh, did I leak confidential future plans??) by making a few stops in the DC and Baltimore areas! Now I must admit that it's been quite some time since I was last in these areas myself, and I don't have a lot of grocery stores photographed in this region myself. So this group is interesting in that it's entirely made up of contributor-submitted posts! In fact, the bulk of the pictures in the DC suburbs that we'll start with come to us courtesy of, um, my former roommate's girlfriend's best friend's cousin. No, I'm not exaggerating. We'll be spending a few days in the western and southern suburbs of Washington DC, moving from west to east passing through McLean, Arlington, Falls Church, Bailey's Crossroads, and Alexandria, VA, , then making a single stop in DC itself, before jumping up to a southwestern suburb of Baltimore. Food Lion Opened: ca. 1990s Previous Tenants:  none Location:  10138 Old Ocean City Blvd, Berlin, MD Photographed:  December 2019 Again, apologies for the bad car-window photos. This Food Lion was built between 1989 and 2005, and I'd bet that it was on the earlier end of that but I very well could be wrong. The 35,000 square foot store is the older of the two Food Lions in town, but it's actually the larger -- the other is just shy of 32,000. Food Lion does tend to have some of the smaller stores in the realm of big-chain supermarkets, many of which are closer to the 30-40,000 square foot range than the 60-70,000 range. Any mid-Atlantic locals, do you have any explanations for this phenomenon? I promise that tomorrow we have better pictures as we take a look inside an independent supermarket just south of here on The Independent Edition !

ALDI Opened: 1998 Owner: ALDI Sud Previous Tenants: A&P (1960s-1983) > SuperFresh (1983-ca. 1990s) Cooperative: none Location: 7609 New Hampshire Ave, Takoma Park, MD Photographed: October 3, 2016 Today we're going to check out a grocery store in singer Eric Hutchinson 's hometown of Takoma Park, MD (or at least where he grew up). This ALDI appears to be a modified A&P/SuperFresh Centennial model. Note that, although it's tempting to say that the peaked part where the ALDI logo is, is original, it's not. It would have been centered on the storefront if it were left over from A&P. The store practically shares a parking lot with another mall that includes the Red Apple Farmers Market , a small grocery store. This post was updated on January 4, 2026 for formatting.

Today we'll be heading down to Maryland, where I photographed this Weis Markets location while staying right over the border in West Virginia. I also shopped at the Food Lion in Shepherdstown, WV, which will be coming soon to The Market Report. (In my opinion, this Weis was far superior.) This 45,000 square foot store opened around 2005 in a new-build facility. It's very nice, and it has a variant of the second-newest decor package. The early version, as seen in this store, evolved into what we saw in Flanders and more recently in Hamburg . I definitely prefer the newer version, which is much more exciting. This location also has a Weis Gas N' Go in an outparcel. I went to the store once almost three years ago, so you'll have to excuse me if I get some layout details wrong. Generally I believe that it's a left-handed layout, with produce on the right side of the first aisle and deli/bakery/prepared foods on the outside wall. Meat and seafood line the bac...

 ShopRite's first serious entrance into the Baltimore, MD metro market came in 2007 when the independent Klein's Supermarkets chain joined the cooperative. Although the Klein's stores were converted in banner to ShopRite, they remain a strong identity as Klein's supermarkets. Incidentally, Klein's is the only non-union ShopRite operator. It's somewhat hard to see, but the storefront here actually reads "Klein's ShopRite." The "Klein's" is quite small. However, it's still present in other parts of the store. It appears that these carts are a holdover from the store's days as a Klein's. Some had been fitted with new ShopRite handles, but others had not. Perryville, MD is located in the northeastern corner of the state of Maryland. It's home to this Food Lion with a very modern design, at least on the outside. The store, located at 5301 Pulaski Hwy, is actually fairly small, coming in at only 38,000 square feet. Although it's a little hard to tell, the facade is actually curved.

ShopRite is such a New Jersey fixture that when I come across their stores outside of NJ, I find it strange. Down in Belcamp, MD, there's a Klein's ShopRite that looks quite impressive from the outside. The store looks very large, although it's probably in the 65,000 square foot range. Funny that a big, suburban store like this would be using these cart barriers that prevent the carts from going into the parking lot. There are openings for some ramps, so the carts can leave at some points. The interior of the store looks nice but decidedly low-cost. Certainly not as impressive as the outside is. The store is located at 1321 Riverside Pkwy in Belcamp, MD.
