The Market Report

This 12,000 square foot supermarket is the only one in central Throggs Neck, with the Foodtown at the north end and a small Krasdale affiliate, called S&W Supermarket & Deli , at the southern end. It's owned by Miguel Luna and has in fact been singled out for being one of the cleanest supermarkets around -- never once failing a state inspection. It was previously a CTown (and originally an A&P, I think), with Fine Fare opening in the early 2000s and completing a full renovation in 2009, later being renovated in smaller refreshes. In the first aisle, we have a beautiful produce department lining the left side, with bakery/deli in the front on the right side, and beer in the back right corner. Dairy lines the back wall, with meat in an expansion in the back left corner. Frozen lines the last aisle. The service counter is on the side wall, with grab-and-go prepared produce (including fresh-squeezed orange juice) and bakery items on the front. The exit hall...

We have completed our Manhattan coverage and are now moving on to the southern part of the Bronx! We're going to start near where INT-95 enters the Bronx (Cross Bronx Expressway), and circle south through Highbridge and Melrose, before turning east along Westchester Avenue through Longwood. We'll cross the Bronx River before heading through Soundview and Castle Hill, then crossing the Westchester Creek into Throggs Neck. Stay tuned!

Today's store tour is a Super Foodtown out in the largely residential, relatively laid-back neighborhood of Throggs Neck (or Throgs Neck, or Throgg's Neck, or Throg's Neck, or Throggsneck) in the very southeastern corner of the borough. While much of the Bronx is predominantly Caribbean and Latino, Throggs Neck remains largely Italian. As is the owner of this store, Joseph Bivona. Although the store's address is on Bruckner Blvd (the cross street here), the parking and main entrance is in the back perpendicular to Crosby Ave. There is an entrance and exit facing Bruckner, however, along with a register there. This location was previously an A&P, and has been a Foodtown (at least under the current ownership) since 2005. Heading in, we turn 90 degrees to the left to find produce running along the front wall (to the left in the above picture).
