Special Report: Foodtown - Brooklyn, NY (Bay Ridge/North)

Foodtown Opened: July 2026 Owner: Abed and/or Elayyan families Previous Tenants: Rite Aid Cooperative: Allegiance Retail Location: 6900 9th Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed: July 15, 2026 A new Foodtown! Even though the Allegiance Retail cooperative doesn't seem to be in the greatest shape lately (you can read more of my musings here , if you're so inclined), they've still had a couple of notable store openings lately. That includes those two in Philadelphia but also a couple of Foodtown locations in New York. Most recently, Brooklyn Harvest Markets has opened a Foodtown in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. This 9,000 square foot supermarket was previously a Rite Aid and underwent an extensive renovation to transform it into a Foodtown affiliated with Brooklyn Harvest Markets (which also has a location in Bay Ridge, formerly The Food Emporium ). Missed Stores - Bay Ridge/Sunset Park

Despite my rather exhaustive (and exhausting, that day) coverage of the various supermarkets in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, I did miss some. So here's a look at what we didn't see in those two neighborhoods. All photos are from Google Maps. Balady Food Market at 7128 5th Ave, Bay Ridge. Newly renovated Halal & Middle Eastern food standby. (I'm disappointed I didn't make it to this one.) Pineapple Farm at 7402 5th Ave, Bay Ridge. Corner greengrocer shop. E Food Supermarket at 4901 5th Ave, Sunset Park. Store featuring virtual food. Just kidding! Chinese-centered fish and produce market. El Nuevo Pueblo at 4921 5th Ave, Sunset Park. 24-hour produce and grocery shop featuring Latin and natural products. Marketa Los Fernandez at 5013 5th Ave, Sunset Park. I cannot explain the name. Latin-centered butcher shop and produce market. One more post tomorrow on our Brooklyn tour!

TOUR: Met Fresh - Bay Ridge

Welcome to the last post of Bay Ridge/Sunset Park! And I've saved (one of) the best for last. The store, which is owned by Ali Hamdan, opened in 2013 and was expanded in 2016. It was used as an example in this article about NYC's "hyperlocal" supermarkets -- a theme we've seen throughout this group of stores. I thought this would be a nice shot to begin with, with Met Fresh in front of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. If you're a New York City supermarket, the best location you can have is on a corner like this. Maximum visibility in all directions! You can see where the store used to end, where the vertical brown stripe is visible on the facade. You enter to produce in the first aisles, with meat along the back wall, seafood in the far back corner, and deli/bakery in the last aisle. The store's famous Beer Cave is in the front corner opposite the entrance. This White Rose-turned-C&S truck was just pulling up as I was leaving, but I t...
