Does this storefront look familiar? We visited it a while back when it was a CTown , I mean a Town Town, in May 2021 with 2019 pictures. I've returned to report that it's currently being converted to a SuperFresh. The terrible CTown signage around the store's exterior has finally been put out of its misery. Temporary SuperFresh banners have been hung around the store's exterior while the outside is being redone. The inside is mostly done with its renovation. A few notes on this store. When the Save More Meat & Produce Market down in South Bound Brook closed back in 2021, the signage from that store was brought up here, and this one was co-branded CTown and Save More. CTown Supermarkets Owner:  Nick Gonzalez Opened:  1985 Previous Tenants:  unknown Cooperative:  Krasdale Location:  120 Clinton Ave, Central Ward, Newark, NJ Photographed:  January 2019 We've actually extensively covered this store on Grocery Archaeology (before I switched that to all closed supermarkets), even though I hadn't actually been at the time. My March 2019 post has a lot of details about the store's history here, with the exception of the fact that CTown opened in 1985, which actually makes sense with the aerial photos we examine. As mentioned there, the C is long gone from this exterior sign, making it only a Town Town supermarket. The inside, however, is much better maintained, if not the most modern. Though I haven't heard any updates on this lately, the CTown was originally slated to be demolished and replaced with a much larger, modern Food Depot on the same property, hence the lack of the renovation that Gonzalez's ot...

Original Tenant:  A&P Address:  130 Spruce St, Central Ward, Newark, NJ Opened:  1960s Closed:  1980s Later Tenants:  Associated Supermarkets > Key Food Supermarkets Photographed:  January 2019 We are taking a look at a beautifully preserved (except for the roof, of course) former Centennial A&P just a couple of blocks northeast of yesterday's Extra Supermarket . The store has been abandoned for at least 15 years. Unfortunately, there's no way to really see inside. As I mentioned in the Extra post, the West Side has long been one of the most dangerous neighborhoods of Newark, though it is being redeveloped. The storefront does not look to be altered since the A&P days, with the exception of the logo and the cupola at the top. This store's model would place it as being constructed just before the 1967 riots, but it doesn't seem to have closed immediately in the aftermath. Consistent with some of my own research regardi...

As part of the major revitalization of downtown Newark, the largest city in New Jersey, the hulking Hahne & Company department store building on Broad St was recently completely gutted and repurposed. The 400,000 square foot building opened in 1901 as one of the country's largest department stores, including a spacious atrium in the center of the store, and was part of a small chain of department stores. Hahne's closed by the 1980s or slightly before, and remained vacant until 2013 when a new development was announced for the property. Rather than demolishing the existing structure, the building was meticulously restored and renovated , including residential units on the top floors, offices for Rutgers University Newark, and retail on the ground floor.
