The Market Report

It's been a while since we've had a store tour, in fact more than a week! Today we'll be taking a look at the Morton Williams on E Kingsbridge Rd, which used to be one of two Morton Williams in the Bronx. (The chain also has locations in Manhattan and one in New Jersey.) The other Bronx location, at 2467 Jerome Ave, has recently closed for business. Now this store is a long-standing Morton Williams, previously a member of the Associated chain until about 2009, but in 2016 the store was gutted and totally rebuilt following a gas explosion in the building . And looking at this storefront, you're probably thinking this is the smallest Morton Williams you've ever seen. Don't be deceived, the store is an L-shape and this is only the tip of the L. There is also an entrance and a parking lot over on Jerome Ave around the corner. You enter on the right to produce and deli along the right side wall. Unfortunately, although I photographed this store, I seem to have lost my photo. I only took one exterior shot. It's a small bodega-style store just a few doors down from New Kingsbridge Market. It's at 19 E Kingsbridge Rd. So for this post, sadly, a Google Maps street view will have to do. Tomorrow, come back for a tour at the Morton Williams just a few more doors west!

Our first store on the block I introduced yesterday is the New Kingsbridge Market, and it's right on the corner of Kingsbridge Rd and Morris Ave. It's a little hard to see this store too well because of the scaffolding, but it looks like a deli/produce market. Not exactly a bodega, since bodegas don't usually sell this much produce. But something like that. It's located at 29 E Kingsbridge Rd. Photographed June 2018

Our next three stores are actually all on the same block. Here's a preview of what we'll be seeing. For today's snapshot, we're heading back west on Kingsbridge Rd towards the Kingsbridge Armory . (Random side note: The past few days' posts were labeled incorrectly. They have been fixed.) Today's snapshot is a little greengrocer shop along Kingsbridge Road. There are several others, but this is the only one I photographed, I believe. C Kim's Fruit & Vegetable is located at 75 E Kingsbridge Rd, Bronx, NY. Here, you can get an idea of the little storefronts that line this part of Kingsbridge Rd. I just loved the way this shot looked with each business lined up right next to the others. Very New York City in nature! Photographed June 2018

Possibly the largest armory in the world, the Kingsbridge Armory is located at the corner of Kingsbridge Rd and Jerome Ave. But it's visible for many blocks in any direction. You can read more about the building here , and the potential redevelopment here (although this plan has been stuck for years). Personally I'm not a fan of the ice rink proposal, I'd rather the mall anchored by a nice 75,000 square foot Food Bazaar. But do I get to decide such things? No. You can see the building's hulking mass looming over the other buildings in the distance here. See either of the two links above for better pictures of the building itself. We're moving just around the corner from yesterday's Makkah Medina Supermarket  to see a small grocery store under the name Apple Valley Supermarket. This store was previously under the name Frank's Meat Market, and appears to be a member of Red & White FoodBase. It's located at 2660 Valentine Ave, Bronx, NY. Photographed June 2018

Today's Snapshot is actually three stores in one! On the same block are Battambang Market, Zam-Zam Halal Meat Market & Grocery, and Makkah Medina Supermarket & Halal Meat. This area has very large African, Middle Eastern, and southern Asian (Bangladeshi mostly) populations. These stores seem to cater to those groups primarily.
