Special Report: Fine Fare Supermarkets - Manhattan, NY (Washington Heights)

Fine Fare Gold Opened: Spring 2025 Owner:  unknown Previous Tenants:  Safeway > assorted non-grocery tenants > Metro Acres Market Cooperative:  Retail Grocers Group Location:  4188 Broadway, Manhattan, NY Photographed:  April 7, 2025 After opening last October , the small Metro Acres Market just across from the George Washington Bridge in Washington Heights has rebranded. I don't know if it's been sold or just changed its name, but it's now a Fine Fare Gold supermarket. Fine Fare Gold is apparently the branding they're using for higher-end stores, and this is the only one currently but another is in progress in Inwood , about 15 blocks north. The store looks basically the same inside, and I couldn't detect any significant difference in product selection. Both Metro Acres and Fine Fare are part of the same cooperative and supplied by the same warehouse -- General Trading -- so I don't really know the reason for the change. Even stranger is that there's...

Special Report: Foodtown - Astoria, Queens, NY

Foodtown Opened: October 2023 Closing:  September 2024 Owner:  Rowhie & Ennis Said Previous Tenants:  Safeway > Finast > Rite Aid Cooperative:  Allegiance Retail Services Location:  32-14 31st St, Astoria, Queens, NY Photographed:  September 18, 2024 Welcome to the Foodtown of Astoria, a sadly very short-lived supermarket that sadly was open for less than a year. The building dates back to around the mid-1950s, when it was constructed as a Safeway; when they pulled out of the NYC area, it became a Finast by the middle of the following decade. While I'm not sure what was here after Finast, it did become a Rite Aid by the mid-00s or so, which closed in 2022. By October of the following year, a Foodtown operator had moved in, renovating the space and outfitting it as a supermarket. At roughly 12,000 square feet, it's not a particularly large building, but definitely big enough for a full-service Foodtown. But just under a year later, Foodtown has an...

Memorabilia Day 9: Lots More!

It's the last day of our Spring Memorabilia Extravaganza and we're going out with a bang with a whole lot of different stores we haven't seen yet! Associated Grocers of Colorado Associated Grocers of Colorado is not a name I'm familiar with, but it looks like they were in business until bankruptcy in 1992 . Today, Associated Food Stores has locations in Colorado. Clover Farm We've discussed Clover Farm when it comes to memorabilia before, but it's a long-defunct group of small, independent grocers, many of which seem to have been located in small towns. Food Club We saw Food Club a few days ago from a Shaw's , but I don't know where this one came from. It looks to be around the same age as that one. This one was spotted in central PA, so I doubt it came from Shaw's! Great American This appears to be a package from The Great American Tea Company, a predecessor to A&P (the brand was switched to The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in the ...
