The store seemed particularly messy, even for a soft opening. But in the weeks between that soft opening and the more recent official grand opening, the store is sharper, and really looks ready to go. That's right down to the department signs, which were very much not completed for the soft opening... Look, they even have all their letters now! It's not unusual for independent supermarkets to do soft openings, and sometimes that's because they need to begin to make money before finishing the last elements. In fact, it was around 10 years ago that Key Food bought around three dozen stores from A&P, and with that purchase, they totaled around 220 stores. Now, they're around 475 stores. On Friday, independent Key Food owners opened two more stores. In Queens, a former Rite Aid became a beautiful new Key Food Marketplace , and here in Hempstead, a new-build supermarket in progress for several years had its soft opening. Golden Farms Supermarket Opening: TBA Owner:  unknown Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  200 Henry St, Hempstead, NY Photographed:  December 5, 2025 After recently gaining a Shop Fair and a Food Bazaar -- both replacing existing supermarkets, to be fair -- Hempstead is about to get another one, as Golden Farms nears completion south of downtown. This approximately 20,000 square foot store is a new-build and has been in progress for several years at least. Way back when, there was a strip mall on this property that had an Associated as the anchor, but it was demolished for a CVS. The picture above is kind of the back/side of the store, as it will actually face towards the CVS . Golden Farms signage is up around the property too, and this store will be just down the street from Hempstead's Foodtown . Food Bazaar Supermarket Opened: September 2024 Owner:  Spencer An Previous Tenants:  Melmarkets Foodtown > Stop & Shop (2001-2024) Cooperative:  none Location:  132 Fulton Ave, Hempstead, NY Photographed:  December 5, 2025 In October of 2024, Stop & Shop closed 32 stores. Several transitioned to new operators, including four in the New York metro area that went to Food Bazaar. Now, a little over a year later, Food Bazaar is holding the grand opening for its Hempstead location -- the first acquired Stop & Shop to finish its extensive remodel. The store has been open for business during the remodel, and only closed overnight for the transition to Food Bazaar. Before that, this supermarket was built as a Melmarkets Foodtown, a chain acquired in 1996 by Ahold-owned Edwards. The Edwards stores were rolled into Stop & Shop in 2000-2001, and the store was remodeled shortly thereafter by Stop & Shop. It got another renovation in 2020, although it...
