Original Grocery Tenant: ACME Markets Address: 24 Main Ave, Hawley, PA Opened:  1950s Closed:  1994 Later Tenants:  Insalaco's (1994-1995) > Dutch's Market (1995-2006) > IGA (2006-2014) > Dollar General (2015- ) Photographed:  December 18, 2019 and May 28, 2023 Hawley, PA is a delightful quaint little town on the shores of Lake Wallenpaupack, a very interesting manmade lake (where you can also take a beautiful boat tour). This 13,000 square foot store was built in the 1950s by ACME and then closed in 1994, but here's where it gets interesting. Insalaco's was apparently here for just a year, opening in 1994 and closing in 1995. Dutch's Market, which has another location in Greentown which we'll be touring in a few days, was here from 1995 to 2006, at which point the store closed and was sold to the owners of the other supermarket in town, the Lake Region IGA. Original Grocery Tenant: Giant Market Address: 1199 Texas Palmyra Hwy, Honesdale, PA Opened:  ca. 1972 Closed:  1993 Later Tenants:  Insalaco's > subdivided Photographed:  May 28, 2023 This 25,000 square foot store was built as a Giant Market at the eastern end of the Route 6 Mall at some point around 1972 before becoming an Insalaco's. Insalaco's then moved to a former Kmart, before ultimately becoming a Weis . As AFB pointed out a few months ago (which I didn't know), there were actually four  Giant chains at one point or another. Giant-MD and Giant-PA, of course, both of which are now owned by Ahold. There was also a chain in the Binghamton area, mostly acquired by Weis; and yet another (which I didn't realize was separate from the Binghamton chain), based in Scranton and at its peak, with 25 locations. In 1971, the Scranton-based Giant Market grew from 20 to 25 stores with the acquisition of five Food Fair stores. The chain declared bankruptcy in 1983,...

Weis Markets Opened: 2008 Previous Tenants:  Grant's > Kmart > Insalaco's > Mr. Z's (1999-2008) Location:  1199 Texas Palmyra Hwy, Honesdale, PA Photographed:  May 28, 2023 I really enjoy shopping at Weis from time to time, even though there's none too close to me, but the truth is many of their stores are a bit boring. The Honesdale one has a bit of interesting history, though! This store was built as a Grant's department store, later Kmart, and then an Insalaco's supermarket (owned by Penn Traffic). Weis has been here since 2008, and they appear to have renovated the store roughly immediately after they opened (or maybe before -- I don't know what the transition process was like). We enter to a very nice grand aisle, although we can tell the bones are older, with produce in the front right corner. Quinn's Market Owner: Jeff Krenitsky Opened:  2010-2022 Cooperative:  ShurSave Location:  401 Kennedy Blvd, Pittston, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 The Pittston location of Quinn's Market was well-documented over on Acme Style before the blog went dark, so I strongly recommend you check out their posts before we jump into our tour of this 26,000 square foot store. For a brief recap of the store's history, it was constructed in 1966 before becoming an ACME Super Saver in the 1970s, a brand it actually retained through the 90s. In 1994, it was sold to Penn Traffic and became an Insalaco's, then Bruno's ShurSave by 2006 which closed in 2008, then the third location of Quinn's ShurSave in 2010. My impression is that Bruno's and Insalaco's did little to no renovation prior to opening, and that the ACME decor may have been intact as late as 2008. Gerrity's ShurSave Owner: Joyce Fasula Opened:  1999 - 2022 Previous Tenants:  Insalaco's (1985-1999) Later Tenants:  Gerrity's The Fresh Grocer (2022- ) Cooperative:  ShurSave Location:  801 Wyoming Ave, West Pittston, PA Photographed:  August 12, 2020 This store might be a Gerrity's these days, but we can definitely tell what it used to be from the name of the strip mall! The rather strangely-shaped 41,000 square foot store is tucked away in the back of the Insalaco shopping center, built in 1985 as an Insalaco's then sold to Gerrity's in 1999. More recently, following the store's joining of the Wakefern cooperative, the brand was switched to The Fresh Grocer, but unlike some stores , this one underwent a remodel to update decor inside and the facade. As you can see, the store is in the back corner of a strip mall, meaning the layout is a little bit odd. But once we get inside, it's pretty standard.
