Market Basket
Opened: unknownWe've been to plenty of Market Baskets, but the truth is generally the New England cult-favorite grocery store's locations are pretty large and new. Generally, Market Basket is really good with renovating and replacing old locations, and the chain doesn't tend to close their older stores. That's the case for this location in downtown Concord, which is just 20,000 square feet. The newer location, just outside of downtown, is more than three times this size. I don't have an opening date for this store, but Historic Aerials places it around 1960.
This one actually has a layout I've never seen before, and right away we can tell that this store is old. No in-store bakery, but baked goods are in the front-left corner along with produce. Beer and wine are in an alcove on the left side of the store, with frozen and cold cuts in the first aisle. Deli and meat are on the back wall, with dairy in the last aisle on the right side and the other half of the frozen department in the front-right corner. It's a somewhat awkward layout and not one that seems to have made it into this century beyond this and maybe a handful of other very old stores.
A store of around the same age is still standing and going strong in Market Basket's hometown of Lowell, but that one has been renovated and the layout is different. Although Market Basket doesn't tend to make cosmetic changes to their stores, here we can tell this is a very old store through things like the flooring and the seriously old-school refrigeration. That said, it's kept up nicely.
Some unusual single-tier freezer cases with grocery shelving above them in the first aisle, and there are more in the front-right corner.

This is not the only supermarket in downtown Concord. A bustling food co-op is just two blocks west, and that'll be tomorrow's post!
