Sprouts is charging ahead full speed with its northeastern expansion plans, and that includes its first handful of stores in New York. In January of this year, Sprouts opened its first store in the Empire State on Long Island, and now they've added a second in Westchester County, this one just outside White Plains. Like most Sprouts stores, this one is around 25,000 square feet, and it opened on September 4.
As a matter of fact, another location also opened on September 4, and that's down in East Windsor, New Jersey. More on that soon. This is a standard modern Sprouts, with meat in the front-left corner and meat, deli, and seafood service counters on the left side wall. Baked goods and packaged prepared foods are in the back-left corner with bulk foods and produce in the middle and grocery, dairy, and frozen on the right side. Personal care and HABA are in the front-right corner.
You won't see many people in these pictures (nor in the East Windsor pictures below) because I was at both stores fairly early in the morning and, let's face it, that's not exactly peak shopping time. Because of that, I don't have a clear sense of how Sprouts' expansion is going and how customers are responding. I'm glad to see another choice for natural foods coming in, giving Whole Foods some much-needed competition, but I'm not sure customers are quite as enthused. At the time of writing, this store got an average of just 3.3 out of 5 stars on Google Maps, while the East Windsor location got 3.8. (For comparison, the H Mart at the other end of this strip mall has an average of 4.1 stars, while the Whole Foods in downtown White Plains has 4.3.) But Google reviews aren't exactly the most reliable tell of how the average customer feels about the store -- and some are irrelevant anyway, such as mentioning a lack of available carts on grand opening day. That doesn't matter from day 2 onwards, so only time will tell us how these new locations will do for Sprouts.
There's not a whole lot to say here because new Sprouts stores are all nearly identical to each other. That's also one of the reasons I combined the two openings into a single post, since the stores are so similar and even opened on the same day.
The grocery aisles run side-to-side on the right side of the store, and that includes the frozen foods aisle. This store also has beer in the front-right corner, which East Windsor does not.
Interestingly, in both locations, Sprouts has chosen to open immediately adjacent to an existing ethnic supermarket. Here in Hartsdale, we're just next door to a very high-volume H Mart (formerly a Pathmark). In East Windsor, the store is in half of a former Genuardi's, where the other half is now a Patel Brothers.
That's all for Hartsdale (though expect to come back -- an independent grocer just opened up downtown on Friday, so I'll visit when I can), and now we're moving on to East Windsor...

...which aside from the still mostly-intact Genuardi's facade outside, is all but identical. Here you can also see the Patel Brothers, and you can tell it's early because the Patel Brothers hadn't actually opened for the day yet in these pictures.
Yep, this interior is identical. The layout and decor are exactly the same. So while I definitely look forward to seeing more Sprouts -- I know of additional locations in progress in northern New Jersey, Connecticut, and even Massachusetts -- we already know essentially what the new stores will look like.
You can see the older Sprouts decor package here. I think both are attractive, and both give the sense that this is a store with specialized merchandise but it's not exactly a high-end grocer.
I imagine there won't be a problem with Sprouts and Patel Brothers coexisting here, as their product lines are completely different. Both have quite a bit of produce, but that's about all they have in common. Even the types of produce sold at each store is different.
This store has more vitamins and the like where the New York location has beer...
And that's all for Sprouts for the time being! I'll check back in on the other stores in progress once they open up, but here's the rest of the posts for the weekend.

  1. Perhaps that will even work in their favors, if people realize that they have substantially different items available, as customers might opt to shop in that area to be able to visit two stores at one time.
