Newton Asian Mart

One of our posts this weekend is back up in Massachusetts, from when I was near Boston a couple weeks ago. In Newton Centre, a former Walgreens has become an Asian supermarket. The roughly 10,000 square foot building opened under the same ownership as the Boston-area C-Mart supermarkets, but under the name Newton Asian Mart.
The interior is bare-bones, but rather complete. A large seafood counter lines the front part of the left side wall with produce in the middle, packaged meats in the back-left corner, and frozen foods on the right side with a few registers at the front. While it's not particularly visually exciting, and it looks like certain fixtures might be secondhand here, it's the only Asian supermarket in Newton and was busy when I visited on a weekday night. So it's definitely filling a need.
This building was previously a Medi-Mart pharmacy before Walgreens, and that was a chain owned by Stop & Shop. For that reason, I do wonder if the building was once home to an early Stop & Shop supermarket before it opened as Medi-Mart in 1974, but I wasn't able to confirm that. A Stop & Shop recently closed in Newton (over in Newton Highlands) and is now a Trader Joe's.
The suburbs to the west of Boston are seeing an increase in their Asian communities, and several Asian grocers have replaced mainstream supermarkets in those areas.
Frozen and refrigerated foods are in the last aisle on the right side of the store.
And as I was leaving the store, I spotted one clear sign of the company that used to occupy the space...
