Superfood Marketplace
Opened: 2012
Owner: Maikel Martinez and Ana Lemes
Previous Tenants: non-grocery tenants
Cooperative: Retail Grocers Group/General Trading
Location: 50 1st St, Elizabeth, NJ
Photographed: March 29, 2024
Owned by the previous owners of Eagle Supermarket in town, Superfood started here in Elizabethport but later opened additional locations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. You enter on the left side to produce in the first aisle and meats at the back. Additional meat lines the back wall, with what used to be a service butcher/deli but has now been turned into more packaged meat. Dairy and frozen are in the last aisle on the right side.
Below left, you can see the former butcher/deli counter that's now an expansion of the meat department. On my most recent visit, I saw both Parade/Life Every Day items (that's from General Trading) and Avenue A items (those are from Associated Supermarket Group). Not sure entirely what the situation is or who's the primary supplier.
The store is small but well-appointed and very clean. You can tell it's a newer building than Universal across the neighborhood, but both have a lot to offer in a very small space. Universal has a large service meat and deli counter, though.
It looks like this store also previously had a hot food bar, and there's still a small seating area up at the front.
You can see the other Superfood Marketplace, in Ridgefield, here. Other locations have been sold and are now branded Superfood Fresh.
