Before we begin, just a heads up: this was originally posted in October 2019, but was rewritten with new photos in July 2026. Now for the post! This is a small corner supermarket in East New York, Brooklyn, measuring around 5600 square feet. But it wasn't always this small. Before the opening of this Shop Fair in 2017 or so, a larger space on the ground floor of this building was a Key Food from 2011 through about 2017. Upon Key Food's closure, the space was divided between this Shop Fair and a Dollar Tree of around 12,000 square feet. Now, the Dollar Tree has closed, and the Shop Fair is in the process of expanding back into the full space.

Now based on my visit back in the summer of 2024, that expansion can't come a minute too soon. This store was so small and cramped that it was difficult to get around, much less take good pictures to give a full impression of it. There aren't many photos of the interior of the previous Key Food, but the few that exist give us the idea that it was much larger and less cramped. Produce is up front near the entrance, with dairy and frozen lining the rest of the first aisle. Meat is on the back wall, with cold cuts and baked goods in the back-left corner. No deli or any other service departments.

East New York is a notably underserved neighborhood as far as groceries go, with far more bodegas than full supermarkets. If the proposed expansion project goes through, it'll be an important expansion of access to food. There are a handful of other small supermarkets in the area, but the largest is a Food Bazaar about eight blocks west and two blocks south that's about 10 times the size of this Shop Fair. Six blocks north is a large Fine Fare that's relatively newly-built but not as big as the Food Bazaar.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens if this expansion project goes through, and I look forward to revisiting someday without bumping into my fellow patrons!
